Most people think a pharma layoff means your paycheck stops tomorrow.
But in large pharma, the reality is very different.

Take the recent Novo Nordisk layoff as an example:
โ–บ Employees remain โ€œtechnically employedโ€ through Dec 2025 (though not working, especially in client-facing roles).
โ–บ Severance kicks in Jan 2026 (typically 3โ€“6 months of base pay).
โ–บ Year-end bonuses are still honored (~15-25% of base pay).

In total, we're looking at ๐š๐ฅ๐ฆ๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐š ๐ฒ๐ž๐š๐ซ of supplemental income from the time of layoff announcement.

Hereโ€™s what most don't realize:
A layoff in large pharma isnโ€™t always a cliff. It can be a ๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜ฅ ๐˜ณ๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ๐˜ธ๐˜ข๐˜บ ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ต, ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ, ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ๐˜ค๐˜ฉ ๐˜บ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ ๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ.

No one wants to think about layoffs, but when they happen, one question matters: Do you have a severance packageโ€”or are you walking away with nothing?

I ran a poll to see what professionals are actually getting, and hereโ€™s what we found:

๐Ÿ“Š Key Findings:
โœ… 78% of industry professionals received some form of severance.
โœ… 49% received $20K or more.
โŒ 22% got nothing.
โŒ Outside of the industry? 57% received zero severance pay.

Severance isnโ€™t guaranteed. And if youโ€™re relying on a job to provide stability, itโ€™s time to think about your career strategy.

One of the biggest concerns I hear when professionals consider moving into pharma/biotech is:
๐Ÿ‘‰ โ€œDo I have to take a step back?โ€ (And letโ€™s be honest, theyโ€™re really asking about salary ๐Ÿ’ฐ.)

But before we talk about pay, letโ€™s address the real question:
What is the cost of staying where you are?

โฉ Do you feel stuck in your current role?
โฉ Have you outgrown your career path?
โฉ Are you feeling burned out or uninspired?

๐Ÿ’ก The reality? Salary is just ONE piece of total compensation in pharma & biotech.

โœ… Annual bonuses โ€“ 20%+ in many roles
โœ… Long-term incentives โ€“ Stock options, RSUs, equity
โœ… Rapid salary growth โ€“ Industry pay scales MUCH faster

Yes, some may take a short-term step back to gain experience, but for MOST professionals?

๐Ÿ“ข Your Degree is Part of Your Storyโ€”Not Your Entire Identity

Early in my career, I found myself in spaces where I was the only PharmD:
๐Ÿ‘‰ Collaborating with PhD scientists in preclinical R&D
๐Ÿ‘‰ Helping a small biotech company launch their first-in-human studies
๐Ÿ‘‰ Sitting on an Advisory Board as a KOL

Yet, time and time again, when I mentioned, โ€œI have a PharmD,โ€ the response was always:
"Oh, so you work in retail or a hospital?"

Thatโ€™s when I realized how limiting degree titles can beโ€”and even more so when we tie them to our identities.

I see it all the time:
โŒ "Iโ€™m a PharmD."
โŒ "Iโ€™m an MD."
โŒ "I have a PhD."

Your degree is just one chapter of your careerโ€”itโ€™s not the entire story.

A job title is a label. A degree is a foundation. But they donโ€™t define your success.

๐Ÿ’ก What matters is how you adapt, the skills you build, and the decisions you make.

๐Ÿš€ You are more than your credentials. The key to long-term success? Taking control of your career and evolving beyond the title.
