The first new non-hormonal drug for hot flashes in 10 years!

In May 2023, fezolinetant (brand name Veozah) was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for moderate to severe hot flashes.  This is the first non-hormonal medication to be FDA approved since Paxil was approved in 2013 for hot flashes.

Veozah acts directly in the area of the brain that regulates body temperature.  It is taken once a day, and it works fast! In clinical trials, there was a significant decrease in hot flashes in one to two weeks, but many women had fewer hot flashes as early as one to two days!

By non-hormonal I mean it has NOTHING to do with estrogen!  So, for people who are unable to take estrogen, or do not want to take estrogen, it is the first promising new option in ten years! It should not be used if you have liver cirrhosis or severe kidney disease.  The most common side effects are belly pain, diarrhea, or insomnia.

The medication is costly but there are options through the drug company to get the first month free and then for around $30 per month. I am not affiliated with the drug company. I am just passionate about helping midlife women live healthy! Contact your local pharmacist for details or reach out to me!

For the past 5 days, we've been talking about ways to potentially reduce the density of your breasts.

Dense breast tissue is a risk factor for developing breast cancer, but NOT the only risk factor. So there are other things you can do that may reduce the development of breast cancer.

These include:
o Maintaining a healthy weight
o Moderate-intensity aerobic exercise (150 minutes per week)
o Staying up to date with your mammograms

Plant-based diets, lower in carbs and saturated fat, may make breast tissue less dense over time. A popular way to enjoy a plant-based diet is to follow a Mediterranean diet. There are many, many health benefits linked to the Mediterranean and other plant-based diets.

If you love a good cup of joe like me, you'll be excited to know that caffeine may decrease the density of breast tissue! This is thought to be due to its potential anti-oxidant properties and the way its impacts the metabolism of estrogen. But, during the menopause transition, quality sleep can be a real challenge for some. And sometimes caffeine can worsen your sleep. So drink responsibly and limit caffeine in the afternoon. It's all about balance!

Alcohol is a known risk factor for breast cancer. And did you know that alcohol use can increase the density of breast tissue in pre- and post-menopausal women?

A systematic review of multiple studies totaling over 70,000 women reported that alcohol intake was associated with more dense breasts.

So how much is too much? Any amount increases your health risks for several conditions, but it appears for dense breast tissue, women should limit their intake to no more than one drink daily.

Did you know that 50% of women have dense tissue? And women with dense breast tissue are 4-6 times more likely to develop breast cancer than women who do not have dense breasts. The good news, however, is there are modifiable risk factors for dense breasts. This week I will post things you can do that may make your breasts less dense. Put your questions in the comments, or email me at lisa@loveyourmidlife.org, and I will address them at the end of the week on YouTube!

Hi! I’m Dr. Lisa Amos Miller. I provide midlife women with tools to navigate life’s changes throughout the menopause transition. I am a doctorate level clinical pharmacist, a midlife women’s health and wellbeing coach, and a professional speaker with a graduate degree in clinical mental health counseling and a doctor of pharmacy degree.

Are you tired all of the time but lay awake at night staring at the ceiling?
Do you have brain fog?
Are you gaining weight around your middle that won’t come off using methods that used to work?
Do you feel anxious or irritable with no reason that you can pinpoint?
Do you have hot flashes?
Is s*x becoming painful?
Are your periods suddenly shorter, longer, or erratic?
Do you find yourself resorting to food or alcohol to “take the edge off”
Does your heart race for no reason?
Do you have achy joints?
Have you asked your doctor for help only to be told you need a medication for depression or anxiety?
Are you struggling to navigate an empty nest or relationships with your adult children?
Do you feel left behind in your career or wonder if you’re even in the right one?
Have you put everyone else first for so long that you have no idea what you really want from life?
Are you just plain tired, overwhelmed, or burned out?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, know that you are not alone.
Other women are experiencing the same challenges during midlife! However, I believe the second half of life can be the best half of life. Through one-on-one coaching, let’s “bring to midlife” the wisdom you’ve tapped into throughout your life. I can work with you to dream big, set goals, and take action.

Some areas that I may help you include:

Heath and Wellbeing Assessments
Medication Review including a Personalized Comprehensive report you can take to your doctor
Tools to track and manage menopause symptoms
Mindfulness-based programs
Plan to improve your physical health and mental well-being
Coaching for your important relationships
Coaching to set a healthy vision for your future
All of this can be tailored specifically to your needs!

So, contact me today, and let’s get to work!

I’m a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist, a Certified Mindfulness Workplace Facilitator, a Midlife Women’s Health and Wellbeing Coach, and member of the North American Menopause Society (NAMS). Plus I am a midlife woman. When I turned 45 years old, I started experiencing symptoms of perimenopause and didn’t know realize what it was. Sadly, two different primary care physicians didn’t either. One OB/GYN just wanted to put me on oral estrogen without labs or any information. I don’t blame physicians. They are highly trained and caring professionals but they often are not given the time to spend with you that you need.

I get calls several times per week from women who find me on the NAMS website, desperate to find a healthcare provider who understands their symptoms. I am passionate about advocating for women! With my degree in pharmacy and mental health counseling, I would love to come along side you on your journey.

There’s more to midlife than burnout, hot flashes, brain fog, weight gain, and achy joints. Together, I can help you with a plan to make the second half of your life the best half!
