Valued Life Counseling

Valued Life Counseling I was drawn into the field of therapy after years of working in the music industry.

I saw how my lifestyle, and the lifestyle of musicians and other roadies, could be tough on one’s mental health. I wanted to learn the skills to build not only a better life for myself, but also for those I spent years working amongst. Pursuing my graduate degree provided me with the tools to better understand how our life experiences, lifestyles, and thoughts impact our ability to fully show up i

n the world. Since becoming a therapist, it has been a humbling and healing journey working with others to learn what helps to build a fuller life.

I approach therapy with a strengths-based perspective and believe every individual has the innate ability to heal. In my practice, I utilize various evidence-based therapy models - EMDR, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Relational Cultural therapy, and Psychodynamic therapy.

Regardless of where your path has led you, I will meet you where you are and empower you. I strive to create a safe and accepting environment where you are allowed to show up as your genuine self. I am passionate about working alongside you as you begin to accept your emotional experience and work towards taking action in ways that align with your values.

Do you spend entire off days thinking about work and prioritizing work above your personal relationships at home? Do you not take breaks at all on show days? Are you a TM that fears saying no to management or the artist, which leads to crew burnout? Do you say yes to every request from your PM which puts your team at risk of physical harm? Do you not ask for an increase in pay when you notice the extra roles you’ve taken on?

These behaviors disguise themselves as resilience and camaraderie. The problem lies in the fact that it is a front. And these behaviors can quickly lead to anxiety, overwhelm, burn out, and loss of sense of personal power.

This belief that you are somehow less than others is typically what leads to these types of behaviors. So I encourage you to look at where these behaviors show up the most and start challenging those. And work with a therapist to help increase self-worth.

Getting in touch with your emotions
Or the skill called emotional awareness.

It’s important to have awareness of our emotions so that way we can better understand what to do with them.

While some people may find this easier than others, it is a skill that everyone can develop. And, yes, it is work – but it’s worth it.

Where to start:
1. Check in with how you feel throughout the day in different situations.
2. Rate how strong the feeling is.
3. Share your feelings with people you are closest with.

One of the ideas behind Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is that when we fight our thoughts and beliefs, we make them worse and amplify them so much that there is no other possibility but for them to be true. But ACT states that the thought itself is not the problem, it’s how we relate to them. So what can you do? Observe, accept, let go, and align with your values.

We’re told to check-in with ourselves to take care of our mental health, but what does that even mean? We want to slow down, notice, and take time to understand how we’re feeling.

Loneliness is something that many of my clients seem to be having difficulties with in their life. And most of the time they talk about social interactions and family gatherings regularly. But there is a difference between being around people and feeling connected to people. Most of the time our difficulty to connect comes down to either not

Pay attention to what makes you feel lonely, make like-minded friends, notice when others are making bids for connection, and make sure you are connected to yourself.

I see this a lot in those who work in live music. Your body adapts to the chaos, and for whatever reason for that individual, and coming home and sitting in the stillness brings on a heightened level of anxiety and discomfort.

So how do we work on this?
1. Recognize that relaxation is a trigger for your anxiety.
2. Ground yourself.
3. Try relaxing for smaller chunks of time - think exposure therapy.
4. Consider reaching out to a mental health professional.
