Did you know that your Lactation Consultant can tell a lot about the way your baby is latching, just by looking at their lips while resting?!

Lip blisters give us a clue that your baby is using their lips to “hold onto” the breast (or bottle!) rather than allowing the back of the tongue to create the seal for a solid latch.

This baby may have been latching too shallow (just the tip of the ni**le), was too low or too far forward in mama’s arms, OR their tongue was having trouble extending past the lower in gum line to cup/lift and draw milk out appropriately.

If your baby’s lips look like this, it’s time for a feeding consult! We can meet in-person or virtually worldwide 🌎
In our visit we will:

1️⃣ Check the latch, fix it
2️⃣ Check the position, fix it
3️⃣ Check tongue function with feeding

This message is from a mama who has experienced multiple bouts of recurrent mastitis and was about ready to give up!

Gone are the days where we promote heat, aggressive massaging, epsom salt soaks and over pumping/nursing for mastitis and clogged ducts. 🤯

We now know (thanks to current research and Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine Protocol #36) - mastitis is an inflammatory process. Not often requiring the use of antibiotics because it is inflammatory in nature, not bacterial.

The aim is to CALM THE INFLAMMATORY PROCESS, address the milk removal process, and symptoms will resolve.

Do you have concerns about your baby’s feeding symptoms? Here’s where to begin!

1. Speak to your pediatrician
2. If breastfeeding (even pumping!): schedule a visit with a oral motor/airway savvy IBCLC (🙋🏻‍♀️) for an assessment and plan of action.
3. If not breast feeding, you can seek out an oral motor evaluation from a pediatric occupational therapist or speech language pathologist.

Contrary to popular belief...clogged ducts should not be a normal part of your breastfeeding journey 🤷🏻‍♀️

Milk hanging out in ducts for long can cause a back up of sticky fats, leading to clogs and inflammation. If baby’s latch is shallow, or pumping isn’t quite right, think of it as kinking a water hose 🚿 and stopping the milk flow.

THEN bacteria 🦠 may enter in through cracks and trauma to the ni**le. This causes inflammation around that milk duct! BEHOLD...mastitis!

So...How do I prevent clogged ducts?
The simplest answer - until we can address diet, health/BF history - Ensure efficient milk removal.

When baby is feeding at the breast: make sure that it’s pain free, you see and hear consistent sucks/swallows, and breasts feels softer afterward.

When pumping:
Ensure Proper fl**ge fit. (Hint: most are using too big of a size!)
Suction on Max level of comfort
No pain
Hands - on pumping to massage breasts (particularly during a let down) to allow sufficient drainage.

The key is prevention. But if you DO encounter a clog - reach out for support from a lactation consultant to prevent future occurrence. And if it’s mastitis? Call your health care provider FIRST, ☎️ then schedule a consult 📲.

It’s not your fault. 🥺❤️
Your baby isn’t rejecting you.
Your baby doesn’t hate the b**b.
Your milk isn’t bad.
You aren’t failing as a mom.

If your baby is showing any of these signs, it is an invitation to seek support. These feeding issues should be addressed as early as possible.

As you can see, many of these symptoms overlap! Trying to solve the puzzle 🧩 alone can be extremely overwhelming. Find an IBCLC that is specifically trained in these complex issues (🙋🏻‍♀️) to help guide you ❤️ to confidently feeding your happy healthy baby.

As a mom who combo fed my babies, this subject is so near to my heart! I can’t imagine the anxiety you feel as a parent going through this formula shortage.

Here is the latest update from President Biden on what they plan to do to end this formula shortage as quickly as possible.

Is it a perfect plan? No.
Will there be consequences somewhere? I’m sure.

But you deserve updates on how things are going, and you deserve to hear a glimmer of hope.
