At Daughter for Hire, many of the seniors we care for enjoy reading but may not be able to anymore because of eyesight decline or eye diseases such as macular degeneration.

Many of our caregivers read to clients but we have also helped our clients coordinate free access to audiobooks so that they can enjoy "reading" on their own through a program through the National Library Service. Visit loc.gov/nls for details.

This is a great free service for vision impaired or physically disabled seniors to continue the joy of reading.

Your purpose is not the thing you do. It is the thing that happens in others when you do what you do. We all know that the work that caregivers do goes far beyond daily tasks.

True purpose isn’t found in the checklist—it’s found in the comfort, connection, and joy our loved ones feel because someone showed up with compassion. Keep showing up with compassion and love. We promise it’s worth it.

What can you do to help prevent falls and help your loved one stay safe and independent at home?

• Check the floors. Keep them clear of clutter and loose rugs.
• Check the lighting. Are there enough lamps in every room? Use night lights and bright lamps in dark areas.
• Add support: Install grab bars in bathrooms and use non-slip mats in tubs.
• Check on footwear. Help your loved one find sturdy, non-slip shoes and slippers for wearing indoors.
• Access to common items: Place everyday items within easy reach. Check cupboards and closets - is there anything that should come down a level?

Small steps like these can reduce fall risks. If you need extra support, Daughter for Hire is here to help. Call us at (407) 815-6670

Caring for an aging loved one is one of the most meaningful things a person can do—but it’s also exhausting, emotional, and often isolating.

If you love a caregiver, here are a few ways you can truly support them:
• Reach out – A simple “How are you doing?” goes a long way. Don’t wait for them to ask.
• Resist bright-siding – You don’t need to fix it. It doesn’t help telling them to look for the silver lining in a truly terrible situation. Avoid saying everything happens for a reason or beginning sentences with “at least it’s not…” Just listen and let them be honest.
• Be specific – Instead of saying, “Let me know if you need anything,” try “Can I bring dinner Wednesday?” or “Can I sit with your dad while you run errands?”
• Keep showing up – Caregiving is ongoing. Keep checking in, even after the big moments pass.

The smallest gestures often mean the most. Your steady support can help a caregiver feel less alone.
