How we treat transitions tells how we treat changes in life.

A few months ago I went to a yoga class, after many years of practicing alone. I typically practice alone to keep my body safe after years of injurious yoga classes. I really miss the feeling of community in my practice, so I thought I would try again.

The beginning of this class was usual

Cat cow > side bends > twists > the music was kind of fun 🤩
……………. And the next thing I knew we were in Down Dog stepping into a Warrior 2! 😬😱

OUCH!!!!!!!😩�My hips were not ready for standing poses!

I stopped and put myself into a Child's Pose — took a few breaths and began to warm up my hip joints — to connect with my Pelvis.

👉🏻 The Pelvis is the governing vessel of the body… everything moves from here!!!

I rejoined the class when my body felt safe again, and transitioned with mindfulness.

People hurt themselves in yoga when they don’t know how to move from body awareness.

This puts the onerous on teachers to move bodies safely.

Sequencing a yoga class is a skill that should be continuously refined.

An intelligent sequence builds a framework for connection, discovery and mindful movement.

An intelligent sequence creates a safe container for your Yoga practice.

A safe sequence means including
- alignment
- spinal actions
- hip actions
- muscle connection
- feeling what’s going on inside

And, moving your body into strength poses once it is warmed up!

Your body is your Compass.
Your Inner wisdom comes from body awareness.

How we treat transitions tells how we treat changes in life.

For 2 weeks we immerse ourselves in what lives under the skin - bones, joints, muscles and tendons! AND the importance of intelligent, safe sequencing.

Teaching yoga has its unique set of challenges.

After completing our 200 hour YTT, or advanced training, we are often left with uncertainties and a bit of confusion.

Something that has always interested me is the lack of mentorships to support Yoga Teachers.

There are many aspects in our YTTs that leave us wanting more. But, why don't we have more nuanced mentorships?

A Yoga mentorship can provide growth, refine skills and invite mastery.

Mentoring can help you define your path and support you as you become a great Yoga teacher.

A Yoga mentorship encourages critical thinking, professional development and spiritual awakening.

Yoga changes us in midlife and menopause.

Midlife is a time of disentanglement …
We change the way we are physical and the way we nourish our bodies.

Your body will no longer be pressed and pushed or ignored.
She asks for adjustment, connection and pause.
She opens more slowly.

We barely speak about how to care for our bodies in Yoga.

Yoga in midlife and menopause provides us with an way to improve our health and wellbeing, and helps us embrace this natural stage of life.

Yoga can reduce stress and inflammation - which contributes to symptoms like anxiety, warm flashes and joint and muscle tenderness.

Yoga can help with fatigue and sleep patterns.

Yoga can improve digestion, posture and muscle tone.

Yoga can help with awareness, balance and mental health.

And, being in a Women’s Yoga Circle provides us with a supportive space to share our experiences, offering us a positive opportunity to improve our outlook on this natural cycle of life.

I am OBSESSED with the Pelvis, and here’s why you should be too!

The Pelvis is the driving force in everything we do!

The Pelvis
👉🏻 provides mobility and stability
👉🏻 is responsible for gravitational support
👉🏻 provides a base for our spine, rib cage, shoulders and head
👉🏻 is the foundation for our legs and feet
👉🏻 is essential for organization and proprioception and healthy muscular system
👉🏻 stores unresolved fears, shock and trauma
👉🏻 is the sacred door of life 🌹✨❤️

The Pelvis leads the way in our YOGA practice.

AND …. We hurt ourselves in Yoga when we move without body (pelvic) awareness.

I did. I used to practice yoga without stability.
And for almost 10 years I have been healing from my injuries by getting to know my Pelvis.

This is why I teach Yoga from the Pelvis.

I’M OBSESSED!!!!

And my students know it:
… they let me know where they are hurting before a class, so I can guide a safe and healing practice.
… and they walk away from class with a new understanding of their body.

Our Pelvic anatomy and physiology has a lot to say about how we move and feel -> especially for us women. 🌹

Yoga is said to be a pathway to self discovery, yet many of us feel like it is a performing, goal oriented practice.

Heck, I remember counting down the months until I perfected Crow Pose!!! At that time Yoga was a workout for me.

When we teach Yoga classes that emphasize posing, pushing or stretching over awareness, exploration and sensing, we are losing the essence of Yoga.

The truth is, we Yoga instructors can only teach what we know.

And, many teachers graduate from a YTT lacking confidence to teach a yoga class.

I remember one teacher telling me that she was told to read a Yoga Anatomy book in her YTT, but given no training in anatomy or sequencing.

If we are responsible for moving bodies into poses and have little understanding about what lives under the skin or how to move bodies safely, what are we doing?

Several YTT courses overlook critical tools

> Anatomy
> Physiology
> Core Alignment
> Safe Sequencing
> Integration

When we understand the pathway to self-discovery is through inner connection, we are able to offer our students an opportunity to connect in their yoga practice safely.

I used to be that 40-something year old in trendy yoga tights…. hot power yoga and up close to mirrors so I could watch myself contort into uncomfortable poses was my thang.

My adrenals were shot, my hips and back hurt all the time, and I spent thousands on holistic doctors and herbal supplements to counteract the inflexible lifestyle I was living.

I was 49 years old when I decided to become a yoga teacher. The more I discovered about my body, the more I realized what she really needed was rest.

As a woman entering a new cycle of life - yoga can be a beautiful journey for self discovery.

When I began teaching yoga I was interested in teaching alignment and connection. Something very surprising shifted in me. A complete 180 of who I used to be.

And in these 8 years of teaching I have not wavered in my passion to help us all untangle from the idea that yoga is a form of straight lines and uncomfortable shapes…

In fact, our bodies are designed to curve and flow naturally… and so are we.

Midlife is a time of major change… it can be challenging emotionally, physically and spiritually. What we talk about most is the physical… hormones, flashes, moods. But there’s so much beauty available.

Midlife can also be a threshold of self~discovery, vitality and flexibility.

I am excited to open up my first 4-week series of yoga for women in midlife – at a local mirrorless yoga studio.

Vitality/Flexibility Yoga for Women Over 50!!!

Don’t let the name fool you – you can come at any stage of midlife.

For four weeks we will focus on wellness-rounded yoga, motivation for self discovery, conversation around our changing bodies and community support.

Each week we will build our practice together to find balance, connection, flexibility and strength – body, mind and spirit.
