Iowa Physiological Society

Iowa Physiological Society The mission of IPS is to unite physiologists in enhancing, networking and advancing physiology throughout the State of Iowa.

This is at the molecular, cellular, organ and organismal levels. Both basic and applied research as well as teaching are included.

Dear Colleagues,

We are excited to announce that the 28th Annual Iowa Physiological Society (IPS) meeting will be held on December 8th and 9th, 2023 at the Des Moines University, Des Moines. The meeting program will be organized over 1 and ½ days (Friday afternoon and Saturday morning/afternoon) and it will be offered as a hybrid meeting, although we expect in person attendance from most of the participants.

This meeting is an excellent venue for physiologists and trainees from Iowa and nearby states to present and discuss their scientific findings and ideas, and to network with other educators, scientists, and clinicians. We have put together an exciting program. This year’s meeting will feature two keynote speakers doing cutting-edge research in their respective disciplines.

We are excited to host Dr. Warren Wiechmann, Associate Dean of Clinical Science Education & Educational Technology and Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine at UC Irvine Health School of Medicine, and Dr. Jennifer Pluznick, Associate Professor in the Physiology Department at the John Hopkins University. Dr. Wiechmann will talk about the use of games and gamification in education. Dr. Pluznick will present her research on gut microbial metabolites and blood pressure regulation.

A focus on abstract-based presentations will provide ample opportunities for participation of students and trainees. Awards for the best poster and oral presentations will be presented on Saturday before the IPS annual business meeting. On behalf of the IPS Executive Board and Organizing Committee, I cordially invite you to attend this exciting event!

Please note the key dates appended below and look out for additional emails with links to the meeting website and other announcements:

• Abstract submission deadline: October 16 @ 11:59 pm
• Presentation notifications: November 3
• Meeting: December 8-9

Thank you in advance for sharing this announcement with colleagues as you see appropriate. I look forward to seeing you at the meeting.

Kind Regards,

Francesca Di Sole, PhD
President, Iowa Physiological Society

Hi everyone! We would like to announce the date and preliminary details of the 2021 Iowa Physiological Society (IPS) annual meeting.

Building on the success of last year’s virtual meeting combined with still ongoing COVID-19 restrictions issued for the DMU campus, the IPS meeting will be held virtually on December 10 and 11.

The meeting will include two invited keynote speakers and a focus on abstract-based presentations with ample opportunities for student/trainee participation. Our non-keynote presentation formats will include 15-minute oral presentations, 5-minute oral presentations, as well as virtual posters that will be ‘displayed’ prior to the meeting. Meeting programming will be spread over two half days: 1 - 5 pm on Friday December 10th, and 8 am - 12 pm (noon) on Saturday December 11th. Oral and poster presentation awards will be presented on Saturday, with IPS annual business meeting to follow immediately afterwards. Please note the following key dates:

• Abstract submission and registration opening: September 1
• Abstract submission deadline: October 1 @ 11:59 pm
• Presentation notifications: November 1
• Poster presentation viewing: November 29 - December 11
• Virtual meeting: December 10-11

Please feel free to reach out if you have questions!

A big thank you to everyone who made this year's IPS/MSPS Scientific Sessions a big success.

Stay tuned for more IPS activity in the future!

Hello all!

IPS/MSPS Scientific Sessions is fast approaching and I wanted to take a moment to bring a few things to your attention.

• Please remember to register for the live meeting through Zoom (invitations were sent out by email). Please note if you are presenting at the meeting you should have received a separate invite through Zoom to register as a panelist.

• The meeting schedule is posted on the meeting website (scroll down): https://ips-msps-meeting.meetinghand.com/

• Finally, I want to also encourage everyone to take a look at all of the great ‘video posters’ submitted which are on display now.

Today is the deadline for abstract submission! Submit your science! Win Prizes!

Here is the abstract for one of our keynote presentations:

“Getting to the heart of the matter: The "hole" story of environmental physiology & medicine?”

Andrew Lovering, Ph.D.

The foramen ovale is part of the normal fetal cardiopulmonary circulation that fails to close after birth in ∼35% of the population and represents a potential source of right-to-left shunt. Despite the prevalence of patent foramen ovale (PFO) in the general population, cardiopulmonary, exercise, thermoregulatory, and altitude physiologists have likely underestimated the potential effect of this intracardiac shunt on normal physiological processes in otherwise healthy humans. Because this shunted blood bypasses the respiratory system, it would not participate in either gas exchange and may have impacts on other physiological processes that remain undetermined. Compared to those otherwise healthy humans without a PFO, those with a PFO may have 1) a greater alveolar-to-arterial oxygen difference (AaDO2) at rest and during exercise, 2) blunted ventilatory acclimatization to high altitude, 3) a blunted hypercapnic ventilatory response, 4) blunted thermal hyperpnea and 5) surprisingly, a higher core body temperature (∼0.4°C) at rest and during exercise. There is also an association of PFO with high-altitude pulmonary edema and acute mountain sickness. These effects on physiological processes are likely dependent on both the presence and size of the PFO, with small PFOs not likely to have significant/measurable effects. The PFO can be an important determinant of normal physiological processes and should be considered a potential confounder to the interpretation of former and future data, particularly in small data sets where a significant number of PFO+ subjects could be present and significantly impact the measured outcomes.
