Tips for a Sensory-Friendly Halloween Costume
👻 Start Early:
Whatever costume you choose, make sure you get it with enough time for your child to practice wearing it. This helps them get comfortable before the big night! You can also talk to your BCBA about practicing with parts of the costume during therapy sessions.
👻 Keep It Comfortable:
Costumes that can be worn over regular clothes are often the best option, as they feel familiar and comfortable against your child’s skin. Comfort is key!
👻 Wash Ahead of Time:
If possible, wash the costume before your child wears it. This makes it softer and gives it a familiar scent, which can help with sensory comfort.
👻 Hats & Hoods:
Some kids aren’t big fans of hats or hoods, which can be tricky if they’re part of the costume. If these items are essential, practice wearing them in advance, and your BCBA can help if needed.
👻 Have Fun & Be Flexible:
We all love getting cute costume pics, but the goal is for your child to have fun without feeling stressed. Whether they only wear a hat and gloves or are up for the full costume, embrace what works for them! What matters most is that everyone enjoys the festivities together.
