In elementary school, I stood in front of my class and tried out for choir by singing, "Mary Had a Little Lamb."

If you were accepted for choir, you got to sit in a specific group. If you didn't, then Mr. Grover asked you to return to your seat.

I was asked to return to my seat.

It seemed like everyone made choir except me.

But, little did Mr. Grover know, I'd grow up and sing every day.

Not on a stage in front of millions.

Instead on the floor with the best humans - playing.

Life has a way of working out.

Happy Birthday, Tracy!

What an extraordinary person and someone I admire deeply!

Tracy quickly forms connections and cares deeply about everyone she works with.

Tracy dives right in, brings so much fun to every session, and her knowledge is apparent in her interactions.

What makes Tracy even more remarkable is her outlook on life. She radiates positivity, strength, and resilience that inspires us all. Those who know her admire her deeply, learn from her compassion and insight, and feel grateful every day to be learning alongside her.

Happiest of Birthdays to YOU, Tracy!

You are amazing!

For over 7 years, we have been a part of Mia and Liam's life.

It has been one of the most beautiful experiences.

They are the kind of people that the world needs.

To say they are the kindest, most compassionate, loving humans in an understatement.

Their work ethic, ability to show up, and sense of humor are additional characteristics that enhance who they are.

But, if you meet their mom, then you know why they are the magical humans that they are. Their mom is one of a kind!

Next week, they leave Kansas for California. A big adventure awaits them on the west coast!

What a paradox of emotions to be thrilled for the new opportunities they will have while also feeling devastated to not see them every week.

Our team had a going away party for them tonight - with bellies full of pizza and cupcakes, we shared memories and well wishes!

Mia and Liam, we hope all of the love and compassion you show and share with the world comes right back to you!

We love you so!

I was the first-born child.

My mom gave birth to me just one month after turning 17. 3 more kids followed.

My mom went back to school to become a nurse so she could leave my abusive father.

She worked nonstop. She walked to work because, for most of my childhood, we did not have a car.

We grew up in poverty.

My childhood memories have forever shaped how I treat others and how I view the world.

It was government programs that gave me a chance:

Free and reduced lunches meant I was nourished at school. I was embarrassed to rely on them, but knew I had to.

Food stamps meant there was food in our cabinets. In the 80s and 90s, food stamps were paper. I always looked around to make sure none of my friends were in the store when we paid.

Government housing meant we had a place to live. We only lived there a year, but I often wonder where we would have ended up if government housing wasn't an option.

We heated water on the stove to have warm baths. Sometimes we didn't have electricity.

Food banks meant we could eat. Processed cheese, white bread, and jars of peanut butter gave us immediate relief.

There were Thanksgivings when we opened our front door to find a box of food sitting on the porch placed there by someone who cared and understood what we needed.

I remember a Christmas where my mom cried and cried because all she could give us were socks.

Because of government programs, I had the chance to go to college, earn my Master’s degree, and build a career that gives me purpose.

On a nearly daily basis, a BTH family shares the impact I've had in their child's life. My work is incredibly meaningful. Without a doubt, I would not be the position I am without being given a CHANCE.

If there’s one thing I wish for in this country, it’s this:

May we all remember that everyone needs help at some point.

When we lead with compassion - when we lift each other up - more is possible for everyone.

As the government shutdown continues, donate to food banks. Reach out to help. Be the reason someone is given a chance.

Live with compassion.

Kim is amazing!

This morning, when pulling into the parking lot of BTH, my tire pressure in THREE tires indicated low pressure!

It's a problem because I have a community session this afternoon, a lunch meeting, and I live 40 minutes away.

But Kim pulled out her machine, put air in all of my tires, and saved the day!

Thank you, Kim!

I loved Henry before he was born.

Because I knew his family, I vividly recall the day his mom shared she was pregnant with him. I often tell Henry the story of learning about him for the first time - how his family wished and wished for him - how they wanted another baby and then he came along. He smiles each time I tell the story.

Today he is EIGHT!

He loves his family fiercely.

He embraces silliness and understands the value in play.

He also understands the importance of working hard.

Henry is easy going and easily entertained.

Is he one of my favorites because he laughs at every joke I make? Definitely.

He jumps in to help and one you want by your side.

Happiest of Birthdays to a kid I've loved before I even met him.

8. How is Henry 8?!

Ten years ago today, on October 8, 2015, I sat at a table with commercial leasing agents and signed a lease for a storefront property at 135th and Switzer in Overland Park.

The decision was equal parts exhilarating and terrifying.

Signing that lease came with a personal guarantee. If I couldn’t make the monthly lease payment of over $2,500, the commercial landlord could come after our house. At the time, Everett was 4 years old and Cora was just 7 months old. Adam and I emptied our savings. The day we had our grand opening, we had $500 in our savings and two little humans depending on us.

Looking back now, I admire that younger version of myself - the one willing to go for it.

We are no longer in that store front. We moved offices over four years ago to a better and bigger space.

The last decade has been filled with a million moments of love, joy, connection, wonder, and gratitude. There have also been days of tears and exhaustion.

Owning a business has a way of summoning a strength and grit you didn’t know existed.

Here’s what I know: if YOU have a whisper in the back of your mind - an idea that scares you - GO FOR IT.

Find your WHY.

It is all for the BTH kids. Confidently and without hesitation, I can say they are the most magical humans to ever walk this planet. Their joy, brilliance, determination, and love are unmatched. They deserve a space where they are loved and celebrated.

Find your PEOPLE.

I have a family that encourages me, loves me wildly, and understands me in a way that is rare.

Then, there is this extraordinary team. Some who were with me 10 years ago and continue to be by my side (Michelle, Kim, Mary, EJ, and Amy). We've had new ones join. Every team member inspires me, has monstrous momentum, and believes in the possibilities.

The ones that make this all possible are the BTH families. The ones that invite us into their lives and give us a front row seat to all of it. The ones with unwavering determination, love, and humor.

Every single day, at some point, I think, "This is everything I ever wanted."

I'm glad I sat at that table and signed those papers.
