Trauma with First Responders and Perinatal care are areas of focus in this practice. Hi there and welcome to my introduction section where I’ll discuss my past, present and future journey within the mental health field. First, I started providing case management services roughly 10 years ago at a facility in Tulsa. This led to seeking a master’s degree in counseling through Oklahoma State University. After graduating, I stepped into a different environment that provided ten years of client care, management experience and supervisory opportunities. Let’s skip to the good part! What can I offer you as a client? Well, I have a wealth of approaches that are utilized to give a well-rounded look at therapeutic services. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioral therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Narrative therapy, and Solutions Focused therapy are just a few examples of different perspectives on how to treat a person’s needs. A key factor in treating mental health symptoms isn’t necessarily the technique, but more taking into account the whole body system. Appetite, sleep, nutrition and activity levels hold a vital role in our mood and brain’s ability to function properly. If you feel this meets your needs as a client, please consider messaging me for more details on how to start your initial visit.

You know those questions that swirl around that’s like “what’s one thing you know about your job now that you didn’t before?” If I could say one definitive thing that I believe 100% after 10 years, it’s this: trauma plays a part in it all. Let that sit for a second.

You might present with depression, anxiety, relationship issues. Insert literally any diagnosis/symptom here and my response is still the same. Trapped/suppressed/unresolved trauma presents in different ways. Chronic health issues, psychosomatic pains, physiological sensations, on and on. If you want to take care of your overall health, treat the trauma!

Next time you are trying out your coping skill (breathing, meditation, mindfulness, listening to music, etc) close your eyes. Just try it. When you take a sense away, the sense you are using strengthens and helps you focus. The connection with what you are doing will likely strengthen.

Symptoms ebb and flow. You are going to have great weeks and you are going to have weeks where your symptoms present. There will be times where you feel you are winning, there will be times where you feel you are losing progress. It's never losing progress. It's not failing. It's not you not fighting hard enough. Don't allow your brain and thought processes to take over what you're working towards. When you get off track, remember where you started in your mental health journey. I promise that you are utilizing coping strategies, thinking healthier thoughts and recognizing more behaviors than you were back then. Keep going.

Midday challenge-Scan your body from head to toe. What do you get? When I ask that question, I’m asking what do you FEEL in your body. What are the emotions, sensations you feel? This can take 30 seconds to minutes.

Pair a couple of deep inhales and exhales with this and see what you notice.

Communication has been a pressing topic this week! Here’s a few things we can pay attention to while holding conversations and using words with others.

1. Say what you mean, be direct.
2. If the intent of communication is to hurt another person, don’t.
3. Watch your tone, seriously.
4. Use language that is inclusive to all parties and not accusatory or defensive.
5. Last but not least, if you don’t know what to say, perhaps say that.

Communication is complicated, I’ll give you that. But we complicate it way more than what is needed!

A local post got me thinking about small businesses. Really before the last 8 months, I heard people say “shop small,” “support local businesses,” but I never really understood the principle behind that until now. A small business goes against the grain, you have someone saying I believe in this and I’m going to put it out there. There’s more than likely a bigger business doing the same exact idea, but there’s a dream and there’s a vision that lives outside what already exists. It is deeply personal. It’s blood, sweat and tears. No PTO, no retirement, no guarantees. That is why it’s so special. It’s individualized, it’s true work ethic, it’s important to have a happy customer. So if you know someone that has a small business and want to support them, here’s how:

-Leave a review explaining the service and experience.
-share a post on social medial.
-spread the resource with friends and family.
-give a shout out on a local page.
-show up to events for support.

I have met the most kind, special people in the last 8 months. It is truly such a welcoming community and everyone helps one another. It’s so refreshing and I’m so glad to be a part of Owasso!

Unpopular opinions:

1. Just because you watched a TikTok on a certain diagnosis and it fits, doesn’t mean you have it.
2. ChatGPT isn’t used as a replacement for therapy.
3. Any and all material shared on social media isn’t therapy, it’s simply information that someone has shared. You can like it or even love it, but it doesn’t mean it’s clinically what’s appropriate for you.

This might step on toes, but just a gentle reminder that too much social media isn’t a good thing!

Therapy isn't magic.
Therapy isn't instant (no wand included).

I'm saying that in the most understanding way, I get it. The mentality of "aren't I doing enough by showing up and working hard?" If I had it my way, I would actually have a wand that glitter sprinkled out of. BUT I'm not Cinderella which is unfortunate. Here's what I can promise you:

-Increased awareness and insight
-Thinking pattern recognition
-Identifying and processing emotions
-Understanding behaviors

Take the leap! I've never met 1 single person that has said "I wish I never started therapy."

It's important that we acknowledge Breastfeeding Awareness month. However, this isn't just about breastfeeding. Whether it's pumping, hand expressing, formula feeding, bottle feeding, donor supply feeding, it COUNTS. Hear me loud and clear, your ability to feed your baby is not a reflection of if you are a good mother. Fed is best, remember that when you are going through times of uncertainty. Many many predictors go into milk production and supply, the moment you believe it's a fault of yours is when we get in the danger zone. Bottom line, a mother is the strongest, bravest, most beautiful being regardless of how you feed your baby.

An area of focus that is visited often in therapy is self-esteem. It can be complex to think about and often, it's not an immediate response. What color is the sky? Blue is generally an overwhelming answer to that. But when I ask, how do you view yourself, is the response immediate? Don't worry, it's common to not have a prepared answer. This area needs exploration and time to reveal the true answer. How do you feel about yourself? Do you have positive attributes? Do you view yourself as one level, instead of multidimensional? All of these are great questions. Most people don't realize how often self-esteem comes into play with life. Occupations, relationships, parenting, hobbies, movement, nutrition (I could literally keep going and going). If this is something you struggle with, you are not alone. Having a third party to help guide you into these insights are a great resource to have!
