BAYLOR UNIVERSITY PUBLISHES LARGEST STUDY EVER ON MASSAGE THERAPY USE

July 2024

"Many people receive massage therapy and for many reasons. But according to a new study – the largest and most comprehensive ever conducted on the subject – the prevalence of visits to massage therapists is higher than one might have imagined and the reasons may be surprising."

“What our study shows is that it’s probably not helpful any longer to label massage as an ‘alternative’ therapy, with all of the marginality that the term conveys.”

“Licensed massage therapists ought to be respected as mainstream practitioners, whose profession provides a therapeutic approach not just to address pain and functional challenges but to foster wellness and overall well-being, physical and emotional.

Everyone can benefit from working with a skilled massage therapist. They’re the hidden gems in the healthcare system.” - Jeff Levin, Ph.D., M.P.H., University Professor of Epidemiology and Population Health. (Robert Rogers/Baylor University)

Veterans are an underserved demographic in the massage community. Regular massage can make such a difference for the lives of veterans.

What is a muscle knot?

It's *not* what you think. Something MTs hear a lot about is how bad a clients knots are. Or my personal favorite...when I'm working on an area like the trapezius going into the rhomboids and the tissue is extra dense, a client will ask, "is that just one big knot in there?" I get why they say it. It's not really a knot though, the muscles and fascia can become hypertonic or have hypertonicity in certain areas. Some areas are just like this naturally which can make it seem like you're hitting something when the tissue just tends to be more fibrous there. My favorite terms to use are bound up, dense, and hypertonic. Injuries, stress, overuse, and posture can cause these and make them worse. Trigger points are another name used for these spots as well. Heat and myofascial release I've found to be more effective with those stubborn areas. But it really depends on the person, massage without lubricant may be uncomfortable for some and make them tense up even more.

️Pain in the neck?

You are not alone. Neck and shoulder pains are some of the most common complaints Massage therapists hear about, especially in our world with increasing use of technology. When there is too much strain being put on certain muscles *levator scapula/ sternocleidomastoid/trapezius to name a few* from forward-posture, it can cause all sorts of fun symptoms like headaches and jaw pain. Moist or dry heat, and stretching is often effective in reducing some of the pain and tightness in these spots. And massage of course!

️Relaxation massage IS therapeutic

It's a common misconception that relaxation massage is not therapeutic. People often associate this label with the spa environment or that it is not a real massage experience because of "no pain-no gain". Although you do want a "good-hurt" kind of feeling, true pain is not the goal. Our bodies are always looking for homeostasis. It is the chronic stress, trauma, injuries, body mechanics, ergonomics, and daily habits that get us further away from it. Through massage we are not just interacting with individual muscles and muscle groups. We are interacting with the nervous system first. Our nervous systems are the gateways to the rest of our bodily functions. Massage can help activate the parasympathetic nervous system which is our "rest and digest", while the sympathetic nervous system is our "fight or flight". As soon as our hands touch the skin on a client, we are three neural synapses away from their brain. It's pretty amazing to think how simple massage can be to be truly effective. Which is why I think the term "relaxation massage" needs to go away, and in place just massage or "therapeutic massage". Because in reality, our bodies don't care about the type of massage we're receiving, the focus should be on the quality of techniques and let the body decide the rest.
