Your tongue does more than help you speak or swallow. It also affects your posture and the way your brain coordinates movement.

When the tongue rests naturally against the roof of your mouth, it:
-Activates sensory receptors
-Supports nasal breathing
-Helps keep your head and neck properly aligned

Tongue up → better neck tone, steadier posture, and more efficient diaphragm
Tongue down → compensations, forward-head posture, and head/neck tension

Every time your tongue touches the palate, your brain takes notice. Over time, these repeated signals help shape long-lasting neuromuscular patterns.

If you’re interested in improving your tongue posture, contact us! We offer personalized treatment for better breathing and overall health.

Why Muscles Matter More Than Braces:

Orthodontics has traditionally focused on mechanics: wires, brackets, and retainers that move teeth into alignment. However, long-term success depends not just on tooth position, but on the function behind the structure.

Poor oral posture, including mouth breathing and low tongue position, contributes to unfavorable facial development, reduced airway size, and instability in orthodontic results. These muscle patterns often go unaddressed, leading to orthodontic relapse even after years of treatment.

Lasting change requires the correction of these underlying muscle habits. Myofunctional therapy, which restores proper breathing, tongue posture, and muscle balance, supports natural growth and creates conditions for stable, healthy outcomes.

Muscles shape the face and determine function. Wires alone cannot overcome poor habits left unresolved.

- This post is based on the findings of Dr. Bill Hang, DDS, MSD, a leader in airway-centered, face-focused orthodontics.

If you’re curious about how improving muscle function could support your orthodontic results, feel free to reach out. OMT of New York is here to help!

Chewing and Brain Development: What’s the Connection?
- Chewing does more than just help kids eat. It also supports brain development, posture, and coordination. If a child always chews on one side, it can throw off balance, affect crawling, walking, and even handwriting.
- Chewing on both sides activates both brain hemispheres, improves jaw and neck stability, and supports key movement patterns.
But here's the catch: nasal breathing is essential. Mouth breathing can mess with tongue position, facial tone, and the rhythm of chewing.
- Simple habits like balanced chewing and nose breathing build the foundation for bigger skills later on. The little things really do matter!

Do you breathe through your mouth without realizing it?
It might be affecting more than you think.

Mouth breathing sends subtle stress signals to your brain, activating the “fight or flight” response, even when you’re at rest. Over time, this can increase cortisol levels, raise your heart rate, reduce oxygen to the brain, and make it harder to focus, sleep, or feel calm.

Common signs include waking up with a dry throat, snoring, brain fog, dark circles, and chronic fatigue.

The good news? Nasal breathing helps shift your body into a calmer, more balanced state. It supports better sleep, clearer thinking, and emotional regulation.

Your breath is a simple but powerful tool. Becoming more aware of it can lead to real change, from the inside out!
