Lymphatic Drainage Massage
What is it and what are the benefits of Massage?
First what is the Lymphatic System. Lymphatic system is 1 of the 11 organ systems in the human body made up of vessels that carry fluid called Lymph.
The lymphatic system is part of your immune system with a network of vessels throughout the body. It produces and releases lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) and other immune cells. It is your primary defense against bacteria, viruses, and fungus by supplying plasma-rich protein to your blood as well as carrying away toxins and other debris.
The lymphatic system contains over 600 collection sites called lymph nodes.
These nodes are formed at the junction sites (where most problems occur) in the lymph vessel network. Lymph vessels do not have a central pump the way arteries have from the pumping action of the heart. Lymph moves by the pulsing of nearby arteries and squeezing of nearby muscles.
When the Lymphatic system is compromised either by a genetic condition to the Lymphatic system known as Primary Lymphodema or by damage such as surgery, or obesity for example that is known as Secondary Lymphodema. It can be a combination as well.
Some symptoms would be swelling in arms or legs, aching, tightness, thickening of the skin and pitting (when pressing the skin it does not return quickly) of the area. Seeing a doctor would be advisable.
Lymphatic drainage is a way to help and maintain the Lymphatic system. It is a process that a Massage Therapist should be trained in. This form of drainage will encourage lymph to flow more freely, remove blockages along vessels and within nodes, remove harmful toxins, stimulate the immune system, clear Lymphedema and fluid retention, fat evacuates through the vessels as well, so it can help with clearing cellulite.
I am trained in Lymphatic Drainage as well as Medical Massage that is recommended by a Physician.
