September is FALL PREVENTION AWARENESS month! How many strategies do you use to prevent falls?
As an occupational therapist, I like to think about fall prevention as a PERSON, TASK, and ENVIRONMENT match-up:
The abilities of the PERSON must match the requirements of the TASK, which must also match the setup of the ENVIRONMENT.
If one of these factors is mismatched with the others, a FALL or failure to perform is inevitable.
The good news is that each of these factors can be modified to increase the chance of success and safety!
PERSON - participate in therapy or exercise to improve strength, flexibility, balance, endurance, and safety awareness
TASK/ACTIVITY - change the way an activity is performed to make it less complex, either in number of steps, number of movements required, or amount of effort required (an OT can REALLY help with this aspect)
ENVIRONMENT - reduce clutter, provide places to sit, install grab bars/railing, increase lighting, and secure rugs/furniture to make the space less complicated and more user-friendly
