π‘ The Treatment Gap: Why Many With OUD Donβt Get Life-Saving Meds
In 2022, the U.S. recorded 81,800 opioid-involved overdose deaths (CDC).
And despite overwhelming evidence that MOUD medications β buprenorphine, methadone, and extended-release naltrexone β dramatically reduce overdose risk, only a small percentage of people with Opioid Use Disorder ever receive them.
A recent JAMA Network study shows a new barrier: after the 2023 rollback of continuous Medicaid coverage, buprenorphine dispensing dropped, highlighting how insurance gaps directly reduce access to treatment.
To close this gap, we need:
βοΈ Stable funding and continuous coverage
βοΈ Low-barrier MOUD access across clinics, hospitals, and community facilities
βοΈ De-stigmatization within healthcare systems so more people feel safe seeking help
