Hello Florida Counselors,
My name is Laura David, and I am a PhD candidate at Capella University and a Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern. I am conducting a research study exploring how prepared novice counselors feel to treat grief and loss.
If you are interested in learning more, please refer to the attached flyer for details about the study’s purpose, participation requirements, and how to get in touch.
The Senate just passed their version of the 'One Big Beautiful Bill Act,' which could lead to almost 12 million people losing health insurance coverage by 2034. The vast majority of these cuts would come from Medicaid- which is the single largest mental health care payer in the country.
The House will now consider and vote on the Bill, so it's essential for all mental health advocates to speak out. Please join us in urging Congress to protect millions of American's access to essential health care and oppose cuts to Medicaid: https://americancounseling.quorum.us/campaign/112294/
The 2025 Florida Counseling Association Convention seeks proposals for 60 minute presentations on clinical interventions, professional development, building skills, interventions, and research specifically related to our convention theme this year of “Rewriting the Self: Navigating Identity, Belonging, and Mental Health in a Society of Expectations."

The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed a budget reconciliation bill that has the biggest cuts to Medicaid in history. This will directly impact counselors and limit access to mental health care for millions of Americans. Additionally, the bill has also recently been amended to stop Medicaid and some other kinds of insurance from paying for gender affirming care. We are asking you to contact your legislators to oppose these cuts and have provided resources below to support you in doing so.

My professional interests include working with adolescents and adults on various concerns and life difficulties. Of interest to me are identity development, sexuality, gender, trauma, sexual offending, and addictions. The most important aspect for me is to make a connection with others and build a strong alliance in order to work together towards a more fulfilling future. My research focuses on the areas of gender non-conformity, sexual culture, and supervision.
Approach to Therapy
I consider my approach to Cognitive Behavioral with a Humanistic flare. My techniques are primarily Mindful-based CBT; however, I tend to be client led and less directive. In addition, meaning making and exploration of schemas and belief systems can be a primary area of importance.
Approach to Supervision
My primary focus in supervision is to assist in personal growth and development into the role of counselor. I work from a process/feminist approach, with attention to developmental level, implementing interventions from various psychotherapy approaches if necessary.
Approach to Wellness
The most important part to wellness is balance. I achieve this by making efforts to balance my time and energy between family, school, work, and social areas of my life. My favorite self-care activities are playing with my children/husband, baking cupcakes, laying out in the sun, knitting, and Netflix.
