Many surface pattern designers enter the interiors industry believing there is one primary path to success: licensing.

And it's easy to understand why.

Licensing is the path that gets talked about the most. It's the one many courses focus on, and it's often presented as the ultimate goal.

But licensing is not the only way designers build careers in the interiors industry.

And in many cases, it isn't even the most profitable one.

Yet many artists spend years chasing licensing opportunities because they believe it's the only path available to them.

When those opportunities don't appear quickly, the experience can become discouraging.

The truth is that there are multiple ways surface pattern designers enter this industry and start generating revenue.

Most designers simply haven't been shown what those paths are.

That's exactly what we'll be covering in an upcoming free workshop:

✨ This Week on the Blog
A lot of pattern designers think they’re being overlooked.

But in many cases, they’re just looking at one small corner of the industry.

The truth is, licensing isn’t the whole story. Not even close.

This week, we’re unpacking why strong work can still struggle to gain traction, and the part of the interiors market most designers never actually see.

If your surface pattern designs keep getting passed over, it's easy to assume the problem is your talent.

But that isn't always the case.

The interiors market doesn't license good art. It licenses market-ready art.

And most designers were never taught the difference.

When artists don't understand how the market evaluates portfolios, they often pitch work that isn't positioned for the market yet. Buyers pass, and the rejection can start to feel personal.

But the issue may not be the quality of the work.

It may simply be that no one has explained how this part of the industry actually works.

So we created a free training to help explain why good designs still get passed over — and what buyers are actually looking for.

If this experience feels familiar, watch the training before you pitch again.

✨ This Week on the Blog
Why does the Studio Intensive exist?

Because we’ve seen the same pattern over and over again. Talented, thoughtful creatives doing everything right… and still feeling stuck.

Not for lack of skill. Not for lack of effort. But because no one ever helped them decide what they’re actually building.

This week, we’re sharing what we’ve observed, why so many creatives end up circling, and what changes when you finally choose a clear direction.

If you’ve been in that in-between stage, this one might bring some clarity.

Many surface pattern designers enter the interiors industry with beautiful portfolios and strong creative skills.

Yet the process of breaking into the market often feels confusing.

Designers create work, share portfolios, and pitch their designs, but opportunities still feel out of reach.

In many cases, the issue isn't talent.

It's that most designers were never shown how the interiors industry actually works.

This market has structures. Buyers look for specific signals when they review portfolios. And many artists simply haven't been taught what those signals are.

Throughout April, Kindly Woven will be sharing insights about how the interiors industry functions, what buyers actually look for, and the different paths designers use to build sustainable careers.

✨ This Week on the Blog
Our latest portfolio review is live, and it’s a good one.

This month we’re looking at the work of artist .le.moal, whose hand block-printed patterns sparked a really interesting conversation about something buyers are paying close attention to right now: work where the hand of the maker is still visible.

In this review, we dig into how handmade artwork like this can translate into real products, from woven textiles to interiors collections.

If you’ve ever wondered how buyers actually evaluate portfolios behind the scenes, you’ll want to watch this one.

But the care you give and the kindness you carry leave marks that matter.

Morning light pouring through wide windows.
White walls, warm wood beams.
A kitchen table that’s seen slow coffee and loud laughter.

Henry feels at home here, classic at first glance, but never too serious. A familiar rhythm of pattern and texture, softened by sunlight and easy living. Think clean lines, natural wood, crisp linens, and a space that’s equal parts gathered and grounded.

Traditional, with a twist.
Structured, but relaxed.

This is Henry.
Bright. Textured. Full of quiet character.
