✨ This Week on the Blog

A lot of designers move into product development expecting things to feel more… final.

But once manufacturing begins, you quickly realize how much of the process is actually about learning to adapt when things shift.

This week, we’re giving you another behind-the-scenes peek into the realities of bringing physical products to life, and why staying steady when timelines, costs, samples, or production plans change is part of the work itself.

Because product development isn’t really about controlling every outcome. It’s about learning how to navigate reality as it unfolds.

Today, we pause to remember and honor those who gave their lives in service.

Their stories are woven into the fabric of our history, held with care and remembrance.

Holding space for reflection, gratitude, and the meaning behind the day.🇺🇸

Once you’ve chosen your direction and your market, your work starts to take on a different role.

It’s no longer just about creating something beautiful.

It’s about creating something that fits.

In the interiors industry, designs are part of a larger system. They become products, collections, and pieces that live in real spaces.

This is why thinking beyond individual patterns matters.

Because when your work is aligned with how the industry actually functions, it becomes much easier for others to understand where it belongs.

And that’s what creates opportunity.

✨ This Week on the Blog

This month’s portfolio review reminded us how powerful a clear point of view can be.

Monica of Monica Kane Design generously shared her portfolio for review, and her work stood out for having something many designers are still searching for: a recognizable style that already feels like her.

In this review, we talk about what buyers notice when evaluating patterns for interiors, the small repeat details that can quietly affect usability, and why helping people imagine your work in a real space matters more than you think.

If you’ve ever wondered what helps a portfolio feel distinctive in a crowded market, this one’s worth watching.

You don’t have to have all the right words or all the answers.
Sometimes just being there is the most meaningful thing you can offer.
Your presence is more healing than your perfection. 💛

Once you’ve decided what you’re building, the next question is:

Who is it for?

The interiors industry is made up of different markets, and each one operates differently.

They have different expectations, different price points, and different ways of working.

When your work isn’t created with a specific market in mind, it can feel like you’re doing everything right, but not gaining traction.

This is often why.

Because your work needs context.

It needs to speak to a specific buyer, in a specific part of the industry.

And once that becomes clear, your decisions become much easier to make.

✨ This Week on the Blog

Consider this your invitation to stop waiting until your work feels “ready enough.”

We see so many designers staying in research mode for years. Refining. Tweaking. Taking another course. Waiting for more certainty before they finally put their work out into the world.

But at some point, the thing that changes your work isn’t more planning. It’s participation.

Real clarity comes when your work is finally in the room, being seen, responded to, and tested in real time. That’s where the real growth starts.

We’ve been there too. And we know how vulnerable that step can feel. But if you’ve been circling and wondering when you’ll finally feel ready, maybe this is your sign to stop waiting.

Most surface pattern designers start by creating.

More patterns. More collections. More portfolio pieces.

But before any of that, there’s a more important decision:

What are you actually building?

The interiors industry isn’t one path. It’s a range of different business models, and each one requires a different approach.

Licensing, selling artwork, building your own product line, or working directly with designers all lead to very different kinds of work and very different expectations.

Without that clarity, it’s easy to feel like you’re putting in effort without seeing momentum.

This is where that changes.

Because once you know what you’re building, you can start making decisions that actually move you forward.
