Once you’ve decided what you’re building, the next question is:

Who is it for?

The interiors industry is made up of different markets, and each one operates differently.

They have different expectations, different price points, and different ways of working.

When your work isn’t created with a specific market in mind, it can feel like you’re doing everything right, but not gaining traction.

This is often why.

Because your work needs context.

It needs to speak to a specific buyer, in a specific part of the industry.

And once that becomes clear, your decisions become much easier to make.

Most surface pattern designers start by creating.

More patterns. More collections. More portfolio pieces.

But before any of that, there’s a more important decision:

What are you actually building?

The interiors industry isn’t one path. It’s a range of different business models, and each one requires a different approach.

Licensing, selling artwork, building your own product line, or working directly with designers all lead to very different kinds of work and very different expectations.

Without that clarity, it’s easy to feel like you’re putting in effort without seeing momentum.

This is where that changes.

Because once you know what you’re building, you can start making decisions that actually move you forward.
