Honoring the Legacy. Continuing the Mission.
This Black History Month, MedStat, LLC proudly recognizes the pioneers who forever changed Emergency Medical Services.
In the late 1960s, the Freedom House Ambulance Service in Pittsburgh—an all-Black team of highly trained paramedics—revolutionized prehospital care. At a time when EMS systems were still in their infancy, these trailblazers introduced advanced life-saving techniques including intubation, IV therapy, and cardiac monitoring. Their professionalism, innovation, and commitment to excellence helped shape modern paramedicine.
Their groundbreaking work directly inspired programs across the country — including Los Angeles County’s paramedic training program in 1970, one of the first in the nation.
At MedStat, we stand on the shoulders of these pioneers. As EMS educators and leaders in California, we remain committed to the same patient-first mindset, clinical excellence, and high standards of training that Freedom House exemplified.
We honor their courage.
We respect their legacy.
We continue their mission.
