Many gestalt Language processors are hyperlexic. They have reading skills beyond their age, but parents report that they cannot understand what they read.

If GLPs are in stage 1 or 2, they are processing language in chunks. It’s not until stage 3 that language becomes referential. That means that they are finally using single words and these single words refer to things in their environment. It is a pivotal time in the development of GLPs.

Although this is a new area of research for the Natural Language Acquisition framework, it makes sense that kids in stage 1 and 2 may not understand what they read and may not be developmentally ready to answer questions about things they read . Repetitive and rhyming books are great for the first stages because they are rich in intonation, making them great sources for gestalts. But don’t get rid of these books once your GLP moves on to stage 3 and beyond. They’ll enjoy going back to them, now with a different understanding.
