Into the Wild
By Shylah Ray Sunshine

Into the wild I go
Into the wild I am
It's been a while, freedom child
Since I left my roots back home
… I once tried to run away
Like a wild animal's prey
Running, hiding, I was riding high into the sunset sky
… Heya hey heya hey heya heya heya hey
Heya hey heya hey heya heya heya hey o wey
… All my life, all this time
I've been a warrior and I know why
I've been given the torch of light
To walk in the darkness of the night
… Years we fought for this freedom
Years I thought I had wisdom
Now I see with new eyes
From this truth I cannot hide
… Heya hey heya hey heya heya heya hey
Heya hey heya hey heya heya heya hey o wey
… I've gotta believe I'm here
To make a difference without fear
Of being seen or heard
Like the bird who flies at night
Like the lion, strong and fierce
Like the whale singing
I'd like to be bringing peace
To you, to me, to you, to me
… Into the wild I go
Into the wild I am
It's been a while, freedom child since I left my roots back home
Into the wild I'll go
And into the wild I am
It's been a while, freedom child since I left my roots back home

So grateful for Sloane Milstein and the way she captures horses and people. Her work feels like magic. You can add her photography to any of our retreats or rides, and it is always worth it. 🤎

Do you have a horse story to share? We would love to hear it.

Some horses change your life in quiet ways.
Some save it.

Years ago, Helen was guiding a youth saddle club ride while climbing Devils Staircase. Taffy was beneath her. The trail was narrow. The rock gave way.

In that moment, everything depended on one choice.

Taffy did not panic. She did not surge forward. She paused. She read the ground. She shifted her weight and carefully stepped back down the trail. Helen stayed with her, bracing against a tree. They both fell, but in a way that saved them.

Search and rescue took hours to reach them.

Taffy never left her side.

Even when help arrived, even when Helen was safe, Taffy stayed at attention. She knew her job was not finished yet.

Today, Helen and Taffy stand together to tell this story. One of trust. One of presence. One of a horse who chose care over fear.

This is why we are gathering stories for For the Love of Horses.

Stories of horses who carried us through hard moments.
Stories of partnership.
Stories of love, trial, and staying.

If you have a heart horse and a story to tell, we want to share it. You do not need perfect words. Just honesty.

Submit a story and a photo if you have one.
We will be sharing as many as we can.
Twelve stories will be featured in our first publication.

Because these stories matter.
And the horses do too.

This afternoons meditation ride felt like a quiet turning of the page. 🌕🐎

Under the final full moon of this lunar year, we rode slowly, letting endings finish, letting old skins soften and fall away.

We talked about how transformation doesn’t have to be rushed. How moving into something new doesn’t mean pushing forward the way we used to. That there’s wisdom in slowing down, in letting the exhale be longer than the inhale, in allowing space between what was and what’s next.

We worked with the energy of the Snake, shedding what’s already done its job, and the gentle fire of the Horse, reminding us that power can be steady, grounded, and kind. That we’re allowed to arrive softly, like a butterfly letting its wings dry before flight.

Horses, as always, showed us how to be present without forcing. How to move when it’s time. How to rest when it’s not.

Grateful for this land, these horses, and everyone who rode with us today. 🤎
The new chapter doesn’t need to be chased …it will meet us when we’re ready.

Social media has taught us how to perform healing.

Wild Pine Equine Sanctuary & Retreat exists for what happens beyond the performance.

We create immersive experiences for individuals and teams who are ready to step out of burnout, disconnection, and constant pressure, and into real, embodied change. Our work unfolds through lived experience, combining somatic practices, therapeutic support, nature and animal connection, and creative expression.

Depending on the retreat or program, this may include yoga, bodywork/energy work, EMDR and talk therapy, time with horses, riding or quiet herd observation, guided time in nature, and facilitated group or team experiences. These elements are woven together intentionally, allowing each person or team to meet the work in the way their nervous system needs.

Our 30-acre sanctuary sits along the Gunnison River on Colorado’s Western Slope, tucked into the mountains between Carbondale and Crested Butte. From this land, and through programs offered statewide and nationally, we host leadership and team retreats, deeply personal mental health immersives, and community-based gatherings.

Wild Pine operates as a 501(c)(3) collective of licensed and deeply trained practitioners. Everything we offer is held with care, integrity, and respect for scope of practice.

This work is not fast. It is not flashy. It is real.

If you feel drawn to grounded, relational spaces where growth unfolds in its own time, you are welcome here. 🌲

We first shared these words a few years ago, and they continue to whisper the same truth.

If you feel the ache to begin and the longing to rest at the same time, you are not late. You are listening.

Though the calendar has turned, the year is still exhaling. We are moving through the final currents of the Year of the Snake, a season of shedding skin, releasing old stories, and letting wisdom rise slowly. The Fire Horse does not arrive until February 17, 2026. Until then, we remain in the quiet between endings and beginnings.

Winter is not an error in the rhythm.
It is a sacred pause.

This is a time for softening, for conserving your light, for tending what lives beneath the surface. The earth is not idle. It is dreaming.

If your body is asking you to move slowly, to be less visible, to release without urgency, trust that knowing. Transformation does not always announce itself. Sometimes it arrives as a hush.

What is winter gently asking you to remember?
