How to control LDL levels?
Diet and exercise contribute holistically in lowering the LDL levels of blood.
Statins are often prescribed for the treatment of elevated cholesterol levels
Statins block the production of cholesterol in the liver, thereby reducing LDL levels of blood. Statins play a significant role in preventing events of heart attacks and stroke that may occur due to elevated LDL levels. Statins can lower cholesterol by as much as 30% to 50%, according to some sources. They were the first drugs to show an ability to reduce “a hard endpoint,” such as a reduction in death or heart attack or stroke. For high-risk individuals, the guidelines recommend an LDL cholesterol target of less than 70 mg/dl. This cholesterol goal can usually be achieved on a high-dose statin. But what happens if your LDL cholesterol level remains elevated?
Clinical trials are in progress to develop newer cholesterol medications to reduce LDL and overall cardiovascular mortality
