Weight loss, GLP-1s & hair shedding: let’s talk telogen effluvium!

If you’re on a GLP-1 medication and noticing more hair shedding, take a breath—this is common, temporary, and usually reversible.

What’s happening is called telogen effluvium. It’s not the medication itself damaging your hair follicles. It’s the physiologic stress of rapid weight loss, calorie reduction, and metabolic change that can push more hairs into the resting (shedding) phase.

Here’s what actually helps:

✔️ Adequate protein intake (this matters more than supplements)
✔️ Making sure you’re still able to eat—not over-restricted
✔️ Using the lowest effective GLP-1 dose
✔️ Time and reassurance (hair cycles take months, not weeks)

What usually doesn’t help:
