How Narcissists Use Financial Abuse to Punish Their Ex, at Their Child’s Expense
A narcissist will financially starve their own child just to spite their ex. For them, child maintenance isn’t about supporting their child, it’s about power, control, and punishment.
One of the most common tactics is refusing to pay at all, claiming they “shouldn’t have to give money” because their ex is “greedy” or “using the child for profit.” They will twist reality, making themselves the victims while ignoring the fact that raising a child costs money.
When pressured to contribute, they often claim financial hardship, even while spending money on luxuries for themselves. They will use every excuse to justify why they “can’t afford” child support while conveniently affording holidays, new cars, or expensive hobbies.
If legally required to pay, they may demand proof of where every penny goes, not out of genuine concern but as a way to exert control. Some even delay payments or quit jobs to avoid financial responsibility entirely.
To shift blame, they’ll portray their ex as “bitter” or a “bad parent,” telling others their ex only wants money, rather than acknowledging their duty as a parent. If confronted, they’ll either play the hero (“I do what I can”) or the victim (“I’m being financially ruined”).
At the core, it’s never about the child, it’s about the narcissist’s need to punish, control, and evade responsibility. Recognising these tactics is the first step in breaking free from their manipulation.
