Pro tip! Stink bug season is upon us. Fill a mason jar half way with water and a touch of vinegar and dish soap. Hold the jar under the bug and they just hop on in. 🤣

🌿 Herbal Spotlight: Eupatorium serotinum 🌿

Also known as Late Boneset or White Thoroughwort, this hardy native wildflower blooms late into the season, providing vital nectar for pollinators when many other plants are fading. Its clusters of white blooms are a favorite of butterflies, bees, and other beneficial insects, making it an important part of the fall landscape.

✨ Traditional Uses:
Historically, Eupatorium species were valued by Indigenous peoples and early herbalists for their ability to ease fevers, colds, and seasonal ailments. Infusions of the aerial parts were sometimes used to promote sweating, support the immune system, and encourage recovery from lingering illness.

💚 Modern Interest:
While Eupatorium serotinum is less widely studied than its cousin Eupatorium perfoliatum (Common Boneset), it shares many of the same energetics—bitter, cooling, and stimulating to the immune and respiratory systems. Some herbalists use it as a gentle seasonal ally for colds, flu, and fevers.

🌎 Ecological Role:
Beyond its herbal heritage, Late Boneset is a keystone pollinator plant, ensuring nectar and pollen are available to insects deep into autumn. Planting or protecting it supports biodiversity and a healthier ecosystem.

🌿 Herbal Spotlight: Lobelia siphilitica 🌿

Also known as Great Blue Lobelia, this striking wildflower is native to North America and a favorite among pollinators—especially bumblebees, which are perfectly sized to access its tubular blooms.

💙 Botanical Notes

Botanical name: Lobelia siphilitica

Common names: Great Blue Lobelia, Blue Cardinal Flower

Habitat: Moist meadows, streambanks, woodland edges

Bloom time: Late summer to early fall

✨ Traditional & Medicinal Uses
Indigenous peoples and early herbalists valued Lobelia siphilitica for a range of conditions:

Respiratory Support: Related to Lobelia inflata (“Indian Tobacco”), it was sometimes used for easing coughs, bronchial congestion, and asthma-like symptoms.

Muscle Relaxant: Lobelia alkaloids were historically applied in poultices to help relax tense muscles and ease cramping.

Nervous System: Some traditions considered it helpful in calming spasms, supporting relaxation, and quieting nervous agitation.

Detoxification: Older herbal records mention its use in stimulating expectoration and aiding elimination during fevers or systemic imbalances.

⚠️ Important Caution: Lobelia is a powerful herb. In high doses it can cause nausea, vomiting, or toxicity. Traditional knowledge stressed careful preparation and respect for its strength. Modern use should be approached only with professional guidance.

🐝 Ecological Importance
Beyond medicine, this perennial shines in the garden, adding late-season blue color and providing vital nectar to pollinators when other flowers are scarce. Planting it helps support biodiversity and the health of our ecosystems.
