Happy National Day of Unplugging!

What a better way to celebrate than to try out these tips for unplugging for the whole family (“Family” does not only refer to your biological family). Today is not the only day that you can practice unplugging, but a great way to practice and start! It’ll start getting easier to unplug once you experience how great it makes you feel to take a break from your screen.

With many people’s lives mostly on their electronics it’s sooo important to find time to give your eyes, brain, and body a break and spend your time doing something relaxing or connecting. Spending time with your family or loved ones is a perfect alternative to screen time and can help improve your mental and physical health!

This is your sign to log off instagram right now and go do something that makes you happy, away from a screen!

This assumption can cause the under diagnosis and/or late diagnosis of eating disorders in cis-males. In order for something to be diagnosed, a medical professional needs to assess and assign the diagnosis. But widely held misconceptions like this one, can cloud the judgement of medical professionals. There are likely more cis-male teenagers that are overlooked for eating disorder diagnoses.

Dispelling this misconception can help medical professionals better diagnose clients and also encourage men and boys to seek support for eating disorders or disordered eating.

This is why it’s important to target eating disorder support and resources towards individuals across the gender spectrum.

Historically, Black communities have not had the same access to financial stability and other vital resources as their white counterparts. This is a result of discriminatory acts such as redlining and the denial of loans to communities because of their racial makeup. This financial instability ultimately leads to food insecurity which increases an individual's risk of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.

Additionally, individuals in food-insecure households report not being able to afford balanced meals, not eating when hungry, skipping meals or cutting meal sizes, and worrying that food will run out. Together, this all leads to a relationship with food where uncertainty and anxiety control the thoughts around what someone eats.

Body image is also affected by food insecurity. High levels of food insecurity corresponds with an increase in weight/ body shape concerns due to weight stigma.

It is therefore not surprising to see that increasing levels of food insecurity correlate with increasing levels of disordered eating behaviors.

So instead of looking to Black communities for reasons for these disparities in eating disorders and disordered eating (along with other health disparities) look to challenge the systems that have led to these health outcomes.

Also, support the that champions that nutritious food is a basic human right and advocates for equal access to and control over food. This can be done by supporting Black-led and Black serving local groups like Soul Fire Farms (), Black Church Food Security Network (), and the National Black Food and Justice Alliance () who are focused on improving nutrition and health outcomes within Black communities.

Are you feeling guilty for what you ate yesterday for Thanksgiving? Well first off, one day of eating is not going to drastically change your health nor should you restrict or change your diet today because of what you ate yesterday.

Instead, you should think of the joy and pleasure the food brought to your senses.

If thinking about what you ate is too triggering then think about and appreciate the people who you were able to spend time with yesterday, virtually or in person, and how it felt to be with them.

What was your favorite part about this Thanksgiving? 🍁🦃
