Dr. Elisa Cuellar Alvarado is a Board-certified Internal Medicine physician specializing in Primary Care, treating a variety of acute and chronic conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, vestibular problems, and hypertension. Born and raised in Texas, Dr. Alvarado graduated Summa Cum Laude from Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in biology and a minor in chemistry. She consistently achieved academic excellence, earning a place on the dean's list each year from 1997 to 2001. Her academic accomplishments include receiving a Pre-Medicine Scholarship (1998–2001), an Undergraduate National Hispanic Scholarship Fund (1997–2001), and a Texas A&M University Academic Scholarship in 1997. Dr. Alvarado earned her medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in 2005. After getting married, she relocated to Pasadena to complete her Internal Medicine residency. Dr. Alvarado completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena from 2005 to 2009. Following her residency, she was invited to join the faculty as Co-Chief Medical Resident of the Internal Medicine program. She has maintained her private practice since 2008. Dr. Alvarado’s research accolades include receiving the “Best Family Medicine Research Poster” award at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) Summer Research Symposium for her study on “The Effects of Physical and Chemical Intervention on the Entomological Indices of Chagas’ Disease,” conducted in Veracruz, Mexico, in 2002 and 2003. She also presented research in 2008 at Huntington Memorial Hospital on “Abnormal Papanicolaou Smears Among Hispanic Women in the Dispensary Clinic as a Marker for STD.”
Activities and Memberships
Dr. Alvarado has been actively involved in the medical and academic community throughout her career. A member of the American College of Physicians since 2005, she also participated in the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine (APDIM) Chief Residents Meeting in 2008. While at the University of Texas Medical Branch, she was a member and vice president of the United Latin American Medical Student Organization, advocating for Latino health issues and underrepresented medical students. She also tutored Spanish through the Que Quiere Decir Spanish Club and volunteered at St. During her time at TAMIU, Dr. Alvarado was a member of several organizations, including the American Medical Student Association, TAMIU Biology Club, TAMIU Chemistry Club, and TAMIU Student Ambassadors.
