This month, the first full moon of fall is known as the Hunter's Moon and is the last supermoon in a series we've enjoyed since August. And this supermoon is going to be the closest one of the year, according to Space.com.
"Many moons ago, Native Americans named this bright moon for obvious reasons," the almanac said. "The leaves are falling from trees, the deer are fattened, and it’s time to begin storing up meat for the long winter ahead."
October's full moon name is based on the Algonquin people's name, other Indigenous peoples have different names for the moon, according to the Farmer's Almanac:
Drying Rice Moon: Used by the Dakota to describe the next process in preparing rice for winter.
Falling Leaves Moon: Used by the Anishinaabe for when leaves begin to fall from the trees.
Freezing Moon: Used by the Ojibwe to refer to the increasingly cold temperatures of this period.
Ice Moon: Used by the Haida to refer to the increasingly cold temperatures of this period.
Migrating Moon: Used by the Cree to refer to the time when birds begin to fly south.
Why is the moon so big? What is a supermoon?
The moon is going to look pretty big this month because it is also a supermoon.
A supermoon occurs when the moon is at its closest approach, or perigee, to the Earth in its 27-day orbit. The moon also needs to be at the full phase, which happens every 29.5 days, according to Space.com. Usually, supermoons only occur a few times a year at the most, which is due to changes in the moon's orbital orientation while the Earth orbits the sun.
Even though supermoons might only happen a couple of times a year, we got to see four in a row in 2024.
August was the first in the series of four supermoons, with the closest supermoon to the Earth happening on Thursday, Oct. 17, at 6:26 CT/7:26 a.m. ET.
