“You’ve got plenty of time for tomorrow. But these tonight’s, they’re going by fast. You focus on tonight” - Sean Payton
This video is focused on football but the message is perfect for all Fall athletes. The process and the present are the keys to your success. Love and embrace these moments. And good luck to our UR Medicine Fitness Science and URMC Sport Psych athletes competing for Sectional and State titles this month.

Always fun to introduce sport psychology skills and have some fun helping athletes to learn about the work I do on a daily basis to help athletes be their best in sport and life.

What We Lose From Sports Events Being Canceled With sports seasons on hold, fans around the world are left to cope with the loss.

When I received today’s news about the cancellation of the spring high school sports season here in New York, I thought of this quote. This decision is heartbreaking for so many hard-working athletes and the coaches that work with them. However, it is the choices made & actions taken from here that are 🔑. Mourn the loss & then start taking your next steps

Perspective. Great quote from Dick Bennett shared by UVA coach Tony Bennett.

Great time tonight being a Special Olympics “Gameday Mindset” volunteer alongside UR Fitness Science Mindset Training team member Amy O’Sullivan. Spent our time getting these amazing athletes ready for the New York State Winter Games here in Rochester tomorrow. We worked on positive self-talk “Power Phrases” they can use to be at their best tomorrow. So honored to have this opportunity.

Hello friends and colleagues,
I am excited to share that I have accepted a clinical faculty position with the University of Rochester Medical Center. The official title is Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and my role will be to serve as the first Sport Psychologist for UR Medicine, created through a partnership with Psychiatry and Sports Medicine. Over the past year, I have been working with other sports performance experts to develop the UR Medicine Fitness Science program, a comprehensive athlete development program that will include strength and conditioning, nutrition, and mindset training. This evidenced-based, data-driven, results-oriented program will bring a unique process of total athlete development usually reserved for elite professional, high-level Division I, and Olympic level performers to high school and college athletes in the greater Rochester area.
I am so enthused to work with other respected professionals, including Dr. Michael Maloney and Dino Vasalos (Sports Medicine), Cameron Apt and Emmalyn Oesterling (Athletic Performance), Yimy Rodriguez (Nutrition), Elizabeth Horning (Marketing), and Amy O'Sullivan (Mindset) to bring a model of holistic athlete development to the Rochester, NY area.
For those of you connected to high level club and travel-level sport organizations in the Greater Rochester area that might be interested in getting involved with UR Medicine Fitness Science, please feel free to send me a message and we can talk more about bringing this program to your athletes.

Kyler Murray.
He went 42-0 as a High School QB, winning back to back to back state championships in the football hotbed of Texas. Gatorade National High School POY.
He followed in the footsteps of his father, a record setting QB at Texas A&M. But things soured with his experience there and he made the difficult choice to transfer to Oklahoma, looking for a fresh start.
He sat out a year under NCAA transfer rules. The next year, he held a clipboard while teammate Baker Mayfield won a Heisman Trophy on his way to the #1 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. So he focused on getting better and became a star in his “other” sport: baseball.
Baseball success led to him becoming a 1st round draft pick of the Oakland A’s and a $4.6 million signing bonus.
His deal came with a unique agreement: one final season of football before committing to an MLB career.
He “trusted the process”. He believed in his abilities, and used his time to get better. Patience paid off. When his time came, he was ready.
The 2017 backup is the 2018 Heisman Trophy winner.
When obstacles come in your view, you are going to be frustrated. What will you do with that frustration?
Will it derail you? Or will it fuel you to make the most of opportunity when it arises?

Jalen Hurts.
He went 26-2 as a starting quarterback. Then, after a lackluster performance, he was benched. And the thing is, the guy who replaced him was good. Very good. After serving as a backup for the National Championship game, he asked his father “What’re we gonna do now?” His Dad replied “We’re gonna fight.”
So he didn’t transfer. He stayed. Competed. Prepared each week while his replacement turned into a superstar.
Then during the conference championship game the starter is forced out with an injury. It was his time. Down 28-14, his team needed him. They were losing, but he was prepared. He was ready. He threw for 82 yards on 7 for 9 passing, ran for 28 yards, and scored 2 TD’s. His team wins 35-28.
His team won an SEC title because he persevered. They are on their way to play for a National Championship because of his resilience.
What are you doing NOW to prepare for your opportunity?
How will you fight and compete TODAY so you are ready to answer the call?

Heartbreaking loss for the field of sport psychology. Ken was a rare combination of wisdom, charm, and humility in this field. He truly embraced being a lifelong learner; you could see him at each AASP conference going to sessions, taking notes, advancing the discussion. His books are the definitive material for mastering the mental side of baseball. Players from Justin Turner to Evan Longoria to Kris Bryant to Mike Trout give Ken credit for their success.
And Cubs fans, he created the
mental skills program that played a large part in breaking “the curse”.
RIP Ken.
