Joy in Family Medicine Coaching

Joy in Family Medicine Coaching I'm a family physician with over 20 years of experience, 16 years in academics. They've worked too hard to settle. Coaching is an evidence-based powerful tool.

Academic Physician Coach partners with FM Residencies to reconnect family medicine residents & attendings with joy in the job - partnering to build and sustain joy-filled careers from the ground up. I'm an ICF PCC accredited professional coach that works with family medicine residency programs and individual residents, faculty, and early career family physicians. I remain active as on-call faculty at Alaska Family Medicine Residency and fill in at the local FQHC. I believe in giving critical tools along with empowering coaching inside the incubator of primary care - family medicine residencies. Family physicians deserve to not only avoid burnout but find joy in their careers by taking back their agency, enhancing their energy, and integrating work with the fullness of life.

The AMA is investing $12 million to modernize how physicians learn, funding 11 teams across more than 80 institutions to advance precision education using data, technology, and AI. This investment supports the future of lifelong learning in medicine.

Congratulations to all of the recipients, including the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians!!

Precision education is important work and integrally aligned with competency-based medical education.

It’s encouraging to see coaching included, whether as a primary intervention or as a key support for translating data into meaningful learning.

Excited to see how this investment shapes the future of lifelong learning in medicine!

New Year’s reflection.
For the past few years, I’ve tried to choose a word of the year.

Usually it reflected a desire for calm, alignment, or letting different strands of work come together in a meaningful way.

This year, it's different.

I’m not chasing clarity.
I’m not fixing anything.
I’m not trying to build momentum.

There wasn’t a word to convey what I was feeling so instead, I’m going with a sentence:

--> I’m choosing to trust the arc of my contribution and reside fully in it.

To me, that means a way of being.

It doesn’t mean caring less about or doing less of the quality of the work.
I’ve realized that when I care deeply about the work, intensity doesn’t have to come from pressure or concern of judgment or perfection. It can come from simply wanting to do things well, for meaningful reasons I fully embrace, including the parts no one else will ever see.

My New Year's reflection isn’t about the amount or quality of work or changing anything.

It’s about trusting the pace at which good work unfolds over time.

Sharing in case it’s useful to someone else starting a year that doesn’t feel a reinvention is needed...

Happy New Year!
