Recap of the Community Clean Up Day at Camp - Please share!

On October 26, 2024, Rotary’s Camp Florida hosted a truly transformative Community Clean-Up event. Over 80 volunteers from diverse groups came together, pouring their time, energy, and resources into revitalizing the camp. The grounds are now almost recognizable thanks to this incredible community effort.

Participating Groups
We extend a heartfelt thank you to the following groups and individuals whose contributions made this day possible:

• Faces of Courage Foundation – Board members, campers, and volunteers turned out to lend a hand with tasks and keep spirits high.
• 1Voice Foundation – Board members, family members, and volunteers joined the cleanup, bringing enthusiasm and valuable support.

• Adam Snyder, Southern Environmental Group – checking out each and every one of the Camp’s trees to assess them for damage.
• Griffin Utilities – with many power lines down and the poles damaged their help is greatly appreciated.
• Community Volunteers – Many local residents joined, driven by their passion for service.
• Dedicated Rotary Camp Staff (Liz, Tony, and weekly volunteer Garth Notel) – Worked tirelessly before, during, and after the event to keep operations smooth.

A United Effort
Thanks to this phenomenal collaboration, Rotary’s Camp Florida is on it’s way to being ready to serve campers in a safe, welcoming environment. We aren’t done but we made a big dent in the destruction from Hurricane Milton.
If you have pictures from today’s clean up can you please either post them here or tag Rotary’s Camp Florida so we can see our heroes in action.

The success of the cleanup is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when we come together as a community. Thank you to everyone for your invaluable contributions to making this day an inspiring success!

Community Clean-Up Day at Rotary’s Camp Florida 🌲

Help us restore a vital space for our community!

Rotary’s Camp Florida, a 21 acre barrier-free special needs facility, sustained significant damage during Hurricane Milton, and we need your help to clean up! Over 30 trees are down or need removal, and water intrusion has damaged the Arts Building. This camp is home to numerous programs, including Faces of Courage Cancer Camps, LUNA Latina Cancer Camps, and the 1Voice Foundation provides over 20 family support programs, camps, a school for children with cancer, and bereavement programs. Your help is crucial to ensure these vital programs can continue.

📅 Date: Saturday, October 26, 2024
⏰ Start Time: 8:30 AM
📍 Location: Rotary’s Camp Florida, 1915 Camp Florida Road, Brandon, FL

Most of the damage to Rotary’s Camp Florida is not covered by their insurance policy. The camp will be closed until we get the facility cleaned up and ready to welcome back campers. We’re calling on the community to pitch in! We need 200 volunteers for this cleanup effort. Students can earn volunteer hours!

What We Need:
• Rakes, clippers, shovels, chain saws, gas, gloves, wheelbarrows, brooms
• Volunteers to help run check-in at 8:00 AM
• Everyone must wear closed-toed shoes.
• No volunteers under 16 years old allowed on-site.
Important Information:
• Consent Releases must be signed at check-in.
• We are also seeking a company to donate debris removal services
• 1Voice Foundation will be providing lunch and cold drinks for our hardworking volunteers.

Let’s come together and ensure this vital camp continues to support our community! 💪

INTRODUCTION
In an effort to meet the ever growing needs of our patient population and enhance the CARE component of our mission, the 1Voice Foundation has opened the 1Voice Academy, the first school in the United States for children with cancer.

The 1Voice Academy provides an innovative learning environment for academic, recreational and social support for children battling cancer. Offering supportive surroundings, the 1Voice Academy works to enhance wellness, compliment healing and foster the recovery process. In addition, they offer academic standards with standardized measurement and effective teaching to improve the quality of education by offering a safe and sterile environment and allow the students to excel in a customized educational plan that maximizes their strengths and minimizes their challenges. They accommodate the children's' specific needs without them feeling accommodated.

On January 14, 2011, Mary Ann Massolio, Executive Director for the 1Voice Foundation, presented the concept to Mary Ellen Elia, Hillsborough County School Superintendent, Wynne Tye, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction and Cathy Valdes, Chief Facilities Officer. The Hillsborough County School District was in support of the concept and has defined it as a “Homebound Medical Satellite Educational Center”. The 1Voice Academy is a center for excellence and a model for the nation. We believe this concept is more cost effective by centralizing medical homebound teachers in one pre existing facility while providing an opportunity for community support for the entire family. By having the visibility and showcasing this prototype, it also allows additional philanthropic opportunity to support its existence.

According to the National Childhood Cancer Foundation, approximately 15,780 children are diagnosed with cancer each year in the United States. That accounts for 46 children every week day.

Children with cancer experience side effects much the same way adults do, but they cannot always express what they are feeling or understand why they are feeling that way. They just know they are unable to attend events, participate in sports and have disruptions with their school schedule due to hospitalizations, clinic appointments and low blood counts. Being in an enclosed classroom with a contagious classmate can send an immune compromised child to the hospital. In 2010, the School Nurses Association reported that 40% of staff and students reported respiratory problems. In January, 2012, the National Education Association reported on CNN reported that 1/3 of the schools in the United States are believed to be causing respiratory problems. Dangerous levels of mold are a common threat as well. As a result, many patients co enroll in the Homebound Medical Program which allows for a teacher to come into their home. This is certainly an option, however, it still doesn’t deal with the isolation and how the child feels and it doesn’t allow parents to be in their work place if they are home with their child. The 1Voice Academy provides an additional option for pediatric oncology families to educate their child in a safe environment, so that they can continue bringing in needed revenue from their workplace and is a center for support with additional non academic programs.
