✨ Recapping an unforgettable weekend at the TYR Social Fitness Festival in Huntington Beach!
Together with athlete and kidney recipient Andrés Falco, we shared a powerful story of resilience, possibility, and the life-changing impact of kidney transplantation.
Our booth became a hub of connection and hope—shining a light on the incredible gift of living donation and paired exchange. We’re so grateful for the inspiring conversations and the warm hospitality from the amazing WZA team 🙌

We recently hosted an incredible event on the Stanford University campus, bringing together world experts and partners from across the globe. The gathering was a true celebration and explanation of APKD’s work worldwide—showcasing how innovation and collaboration can shape a better future.

This event was made possible by generous funding from the Stanford Impact Lab, whose team also provided amazing hospitality throughout.

We are grateful for our amazing partners who make this work possible. But our mission doesn’t stop here—APKD and our international partners need policy-makers who share our vision and help improve local regulatory environments to support innovation.

The conversations were inspiring! World experts shared their advice and left energized to help drive change. Together, we’re building a future full of possibilities.

Meet Karl, the new APKD intern who will be taking over the social media accounts 🇩🇰📱

Hi everyone,
My name is Karl, and I will be interning with APKD for the next four months. I am currently pursuing a Master’s degree in International Business Communication at the University of Southern Denmark, and as part of my program, I have the opportunity to complete an internship.

I am very proud and happy to have been given this opportunity at APKD, as I have a special connection to the company. Two years ago, my father received a kidney through APKD—an opportunity he would not have had in Denmark. The way the organization cared for my dad and his friend, the participating donor Peter, throughout the entire process truly made me appreciate the organization and feel almost like part of the family. That is why I did not hesitate to reach out to Susan about the internship role.

I am truly grateful for this opportunity, and I look forward to all the learning and amazing experiences I will gain during my time here

A global convening on policy, practice, and partnerships in kidney transplantation, it was a time to share ideas with leaders and thinkers in transplantation from around the world. Thanks to for hosting.

Meet Kirk Cox, kidney donor, Army veteran and instant ray of sunshine. Kirk just donated a kidney on July 31 at in Charleston, SC. Kirk wanted to donate a kidney to his nephew Brian, who was on dialysis due to type I diabetes. As is often the case, Kirk was not a match for Brian, but the pair were entered into the APKD registry. Kirk was a match for a Chip R., a fellow southerner on dialysis. His nephew was matched with distance runner from New York, Brady S.

Kirk, Chip, Brady, and Biran were able to meet one another after their surgeries at MUSC. All are doing well and feeling great. In fact, Kirk and his wife enjoyed a night out at a Braves game just a few weeks post-surgery, followed by a hike up Stone Mountain. Kirk has found a new friend in
Chip, and Brady plans to complete a long-distance run to raise awareness about kidney donation.

To anyone considering donating a kidney, Kirk says, “Do it! I’m very glad I did it. Life’s too short, and it’s just a great gift I was able to provide for my nephew, and for Chip. Sometimes I get emotional talking about it.”

Motivated by the need to make a difference and a desire to be a blessing to someone in need, Clay Hopkins describes donating his kidney to a stranger on May 17, 2024 as a “privilege.” With the support of his wife and family, he worked to become healthy enough to donate. “I began walking and eating a better diet. To that end, I was able to lose over 20 pounds and get myself in the best shape I have been in a long time,” says Clay. He has some advice for anyone considering donating a kidney:
Go through the testing process.
Do what you have to do to get yourself physically and mentally prepared. Make sure you are ready for a marathon.
Make sure you have a STRONG support system. You will have to depend on them for a time and you want to make sure they are ready and able to support you.
If everything checks out and a good recipient is identified, it is worth the pain and sacrifice to help someone live a more complete life.

Living Donors Save Lives

In the U.S., more than 100,000 people are waiting for a kidney transplant, but only 17,000 of them will receive a kidney this year. Of those, only 6,000 come from living donors. The Alliance for Paired Kidney Donation is rewriting that story. You can help us bring this vision to life by becoming a living kidney donor, financial supporter or advocate for paired kidney donation. Follow us here on Facebook and @kidneypaireddonation on Instagram, and share our posts to help raise awareness for paired kidney donation.
