When a relationship experiences conflict, it is common to get stuck in an attack/defend pattern. Dr. John Gottman refers to this as "absorbing state of negativity." Anger in conflict, however, is very different from resentment.

Certified Gottman Therapist, Ken Fremont-Smith, LMHC explains this attack/defend pattern on our blog, saying your brain is a courtroom and your partner is on trial. Getting out of this "courtroom brain" can help break the pattern.

5 Ways to Cultivate Greater Mental Health 🧠

✔️Value yourself: Treat yourself with kindness and respect, try to avoid self-criticism.
✔️Take care of your body, stretch and engage in some mode of movement at least 3-4x per week.

✔️Surround yourself with good, genuine people who lift you up and encourage your dreams. Support is everything.
✔️Learn how to deal with stress in healthy ways—limit alcohol and substance use, instead try journaling, 10-minute meditation, and progressive muscle relaxation.
✔️Seek a mental health professional if you are struggling and need support with stress, depression, and anxiety.
