Juke Joints were the center of African American life in rural communities across the Southern United States. Depending on the juke joint, you could find drinking, dancing, music, gambling, or some combination of all of these activities. Always informal, the juke joint was a true community space where workers from the surrounding farms and fields could gather together and unwind. Today, juke joints have become an endangered species as the rural population of the United States continues to move to the cities. While juke joints may no longer be found at country crossroads across the South, the culture and legacy of juke joints should be preserved.
Working with the Raifords and New Orleans artist Gavin Jones, the team at SoFAB will create a fully-immersive Juke Joint experience for visitors at the Museum. The exhibit will be set in 1984, representing the last peak of the Juke Joint era before these spaces became endangered species. The space will be curated with original art by Jones, archival material, vintage advertisements, popular records, and other iconic aspects of Juke Joint design. The exhibit space will also feature a working pool table and jukebox. The Honey Dripper Juke Joint will open on October 15, 2022.
