Have you ever heard of the NOMAD?

The KaVo NOMAD Pro 2 is a handheld, rechargeable, battery-powered intraoral x-ray system that produces high-quality radiographs with digital sensors, standard films, and phosphor plates.

KaVo NOMAD Pro 2 is safe to be used as a handheld X-ray
source when used correctly. There is no need to leave the
room during an exposure.
Aside from the direct beam, X-ray devices have two potential operator radiation sources:

1) leakage radiation
and
2) backscatter radiation bouncing back off the subject.

1. Leakage: Unique internal shielding of KaVo NOMAD Pro 2 encases
the X-ray tube practically eliminating leakage radiation which makes it safe to use Pro 2 as a handheld device during exposures.

2.Backscatter : When properly oriented, the transparent shield on the KaVo NOMAD Pro 2 collimator acts as a barrier against backscatter
radiation, making it safe for the operator to stay in the room.

As a result of the internal and backscatter shielding, operator X-ray exposure is far below federal
regulatory limits.

I love the NOMAD because it reduces the footwork of the clinician and expedites the process of x-rays because the clinician doesn’t have to run outside and press the X-ray button! We literally press the button on this handheld device and keep it moving.

Have you ever seen this at the dental office you go to regularly?

Have you seen this at your dental appointment in recent years?

This is a Chairside Aerosol Suction unit.
This device adheres to the strict guidelines with regards to CDC mandates and "universal precautions." This additional layer of safety is used to facilitate the care and protection of patients and staff, by placing these Chairside Aerosol Suction units in each treatment room. They are of the highest class, as they continuously prevent viruses, spit, blood, dust and more from spreading, by eliminating saliva, aerosols and gasses on the spot.

What do you think about these suction units?

Unbeknownst to me, my path to work in the field of dentistry was paved at a young age. For as long as I can remember I loved going to the dentist office. ⁣

The positive energy of the office was contagious; from the moment you entered the staff was courteous and reassuring. I can still remember the sights and sounds of the office and the joy I felt when I left with my dental loot bag. ⁣

However, it would not be until many years later that I truly appreciated the positive impact my pediatric dentist, Dr. Reich, and his office staff had on my life and eventually my future.⁣

I was born and raised in the Germantown section of Philadelphia and had the privilege to grow up in a home where I learned the value of family, community, and hard work. ⁣

After graduating Walter Biddle Saul High School, I enrolled in nursing school. As I entered my third year of the nursing program, I accepted a position as a nursing assistant at Chestnut Hill Hospital. With my new role I began encountering the many dimensions of human suffering that illness and death brings. ⁣

I found myself increasingly troubled by the emotional weight of caring for the acutely ill. My mother’s stories from the Surgical Trauma Intensive Care Unit, where she worked, transformed from tails of heroism to those of terror. ⁣

After much consideration, and with the support of my family, I un-enrolled from the nursing program at Holy Family University. Despite changing the direction of my career, my sense of service to others and community remained intact. ⁣

As I regrouped and started looking again to my future, I remembered Dr. Reich. With his office in mind I applied to the Dental Hygiene program at the Community College of Philadelphia - I graduated June of 2018. ⁣

From the moment of my epiphany to today, I am confident I have found a career that embodies my passion to help others by not only preventing disease and promoting overall wellness, but by empowering them to feel confident and worthy and, of course, to smile. ⁣

“Be true to your teeth or they’ll be false to you.” -Unknown ⁣

Here is my personal stash.⁣

I have an , a and a water flosser. I have yet to get the name brand though. ⁣

I have used every tooth paste in this photo. How can you recommend the right products if you’ve never tried them all? I think that’s why it is imperative to try everything in dentistry if you’re a dental professional in order to recommend the appropriate things for each individual patients needs.⁣

My absolute favorite toothpaste is the gum detoxify. The foaming action of the toothpaste makes your mouth feel ridiculously clean!! I love it!! ⁣

What’s your routine ?⁣

Happy Monday all! ⁣

Here we have a situation where a patient had three molars removed which caused this premolar to super-erupt and drift right out of the mandible. ⁣

This is why whenever teeth are pulled we strongly recommend you have them replaced shortly after because you risk losing a perfectly healthy tooth. ⁣

This is a 𝐬𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐞 case of 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬!⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Period disease is an advanced version of gum disease that is 𝐈𝐑𝐑𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐈𝐁𝐋𝐄! ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease that IS 𝐑𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐈𝐁𝐋𝐄. So if a dental professional tells you that you have gingivitis please take that seriously and do what you were advised to prevent getting perio disease. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Signs of gingivitis : ⁣⁣
•gums are tender, swollen, red ⁣⁣
•gums bleed easily ⁣⁣
•halitosis (bad breath)⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Signs of Advanced Periodontitis :⁣⁣
•Teeth May begin to shift⁣⁣
•teeth may become mobile (loose) ⁣⁣
•Pt may experience pay while chewing. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Loose teeth are due to severe loss of bone and connective tissue. If you have bone loss the teeth become loose and they will eventually fall out.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
You can prevent gum disease with regular 6 month dental visits. We can catch it before it gets really bad! ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Above you can see pictures of before and after the scaling. This patient will be on a 3 month recall visit for the rest of this patients life. Gingival measurements were 7mm+. Healthy gum measurements are between 1-3mm. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
This patient hadn’t had a cleaning in several years. Causing plaque to harden and push the gums down away from the tooth which is also know as recession. Think of gum recession as a receding hairline. The gum is below where it should be. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I had the pleasure of doing this patients scaling and it took me two hours for the right side and two hours for the left side. ⁣There’s nothing more satisfying than removing this tenacious building above and below the gumline. ⁣
⁣⁣
Pleaseeee schedule your dental visits!! Remember, dentistry isn’t expensive NEGLECT is! If you stay on top of your appointments and DO YOUR HOME CARE you will never have a problem. But it starts with you !! 🧚🏽‍♂️🦷☺️

Hey Guys!! ⁣

Remember this patient of mine ? ⁣
Welp, he finally gained the strength to get the procedure done and let me tell you it was amazing to watch ! ⁣

So his first step was extraction of #8. That took approximately 30 minutes which is shockingly fast if you ask me !! ⁣

The crown of the tooth actually came right out. Took about 6 minutes. But that root tip was the struggle baby!! That’s what took the longest because it was well beneath the gum ⁣

Next, the bone graft was placed to preserve the bone in preparation for the implant later on after the area heals. ⁣

I am so happy I got to see this process everything in dentistry just excites me!!⁣

If you have any questions please ask in the comment section!! ⁣

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that a child go to the dentist by age 1 or within six months after the first tooth erupts. Primary teeth typically begin growing in around 6 months of age. ⁣

It is very important to keep primary (or “baby”) teeth in place until they are lost naturally. The primary teeth are important for many reasons including: ⁣

Helping children chew properly to maintain good nutrition.⁣

Involvement in speech development.⁣

Helping save space for permanent teeth. ⁣

They’re not “ just baby teeth.” They serve a purpose. Baby teeth are necessary until they fall out naturally. When you prematurely remove a baby tooth due to cavities or infection, the permanent teeth beneath it ends up having difficulty coming in due to the teeth shifting. Therefore, baby teeth are as important as permanent teeth. ⁣

Lastly, it is extremely important to prep your child for their first dental appointment to allow for a smooth non traumatic first visit. ⁣

A great way to get your child familiar is to take turns being the dentist and the patient with your child. Examine each other’s teeth with a mirror or use your fingers to count each other’s teeth so that your child will be familiar with the feel of a dentist examination. Make it fun!

Did you know: ⁣

Whether you have an electric tooth brush or manual toothbrush you should change your toothbrush every 𝟑 months!! ⁣

Also 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 buy a “hard” bristled toothbrush. That will ruin your gums in no time especially if you’re heavy handed and use a hard brush 😩😩😩. ⁣

Soft brush only !⁣

The amount of pressure you need while brushing is equivalent to the amount of pressure you can produce using your non dominant hand. ⁣

Lastly, everyone should be using electric toothbrushes ! I keep regular brushes for company in case someone forgets their toothbrush but please do yourself a favor and invest in an electric brush!

Holy 𝐌𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫!⁣⁣
⁣⁣
This my friends is the result of neglecting your dental hygienist visits. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
In this case the patient hasn’t seen a dentist in more than a decade. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
When you come to the dentist regularly we can catch things before they become painful and result in expensive treatment. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
In this case how do you think #31 and #32 should be treated?? 😩 ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
If you guessed extraction of 𝐁𝐎𝐓𝐇 teeth then you are correct. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The patient presented with pain to his lower right side and upon taking radiographs the problem could indeed be recognized very easily. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The third molar has erupted in a very bad direction causing trauma to the tooth next door resulting in extraction of unfortunately both teeth!! ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The third molars really serve no purpose. Most people are unable to properly keep them clean therefore most doctors will just advise you to remove them even if they don’t cause you problems. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
As you can also see in the image above the bone health around the tooth isn’t so great so the patient isn’t a candidate for an implant to replace #31. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Please see your dentist every 6 months! ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Also if your 3rd molar are coming in horizontally remove them 𝐈𝐌𝐌𝐄𝐃𝐈𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐋𝐘!!!! ⁣⁣

What are 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬?

Dental sealants are thin tooth colored coverings painted on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth on children typically between the ages of 6-16 years to help prevent dental cavities.

Sealants are designed to fill the deep pits and grooves of your molars, which are susceptible to caries because they trap food particles in these areas of the teeth.

Sealants are 𝐇𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐋𝐘 recommended for children because around this age kids aren’t the best brushes yet. Therefore this extra protection will save them the headache of an extra dental visit.

The process doesn’t take very long at all depending on each patient. Some kids have a very strong gag reflexes which can prolong the process.

Sealants do not require any form of anesthesia and can last for many years.

The first step is preparation. The hygienist or doctor must first remove any plaque or debris from the surface that’s being treated. Next the clinician will need to isolate and dry the tooth using the air from the air water syringe. Then the hygienist will etch the surface of the tooth, rinse off the etching material and dry the tooth again.

The next step is Sealant application. The clinician will now need to apply the dental sealant material to the surface of the tooth with a brush; a self-curing light will be used for about 30 seconds to bond the sealant to the tooth surface.

Lastly, the dental hygienist and dentist will evaluate the dental sealant and check its occlusion. Once the dental sealant has hardened it becomes a hard plastic coating, and you can chew on the tooth again.

Immediately after the procedure we recommend nothing hard and crunchy for a few hours because you don’t want to pop the sealant out which is a possibility depending upon what the child consumes.

OH-EM-GEE THE 𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐆𝐔𝐀𝐋 BAR!!!

A lingual bar is a permanent retainer that is placed on the tongue (lingual) side of your teeth.

Retainers play a vital role in your orthodontic treatment. They hold the teeth in the position where they were placed during orthodontic treatment.

Your teeth have a natural tendency to move after treatment, usually in the direction of their original position.

The purpose of the retainer is to keep your teeth from relapsing to their original position.

If you do not follow through with wearing your retainer you may end up needing braces or Invisalign again to correct the relapse that has occurred.

Do your self a favor and always wear your retainer. You didn’t spend all that money for a perfect smile for nothing!

Keep in mine with this lingual bar you have to work very hard to keep it clean. It’s tedious work but it isn’t impossible.

My recommendation is to buy soft picks, super floss and threaders to get under this bar.

In the picture above is calculus lining the lingual bar due to a lack of keep the area clean. As you can see I did a great job removing all of that hard build up.

This patient hadn’t been to the dentist for a little while and now has taken things much more seriously after needing a scaling.

If and only if you floss🧚🏽‍♂️ ⁣
Most people hate flossing. 𝗪𝐡𝐲 you ask? Because, for most people, the idea of taking out a piece of string floss, wrapping it around their index and middle fingers, placing it between two teeth repeatedly is entirely too tedious.⁣

I’m here to tell you that there are sooooo many options today to effectively clean between your teeth. Dental floss isn’t the only thing around anymore, there are interdental brushes, soft picks and water piks to name a few! My best advice to you is to buy everything there is and choose which works for YOU! We have to take into consideration all the different age groups. I wouldn’t recommend string floss to a patient with limited dexterity i.e. children and elderly. ⁣

When you don't floss, you're at risk for 𝐆𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬, and 𝐜𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 between your teeth. Without flossing, you are not able to remove food from between your teeth no matter how well you brush your teeth. ⁣

The same plaque that causes gingivitis can lead to the growth of harmful bacteria that will destroy the enamel between your teeth, causing your enamel to weaken and consequently forming a cavity.⁣

Do yourself and your pockets a favor and floss! 2 times a day!! I beg you. It’s the easiest way to prevent decay and make your hygienist proud! ⁣

Here’s how I look at it. Dental floss costs $5 and cavities cost a couple hundred dollars depending on your insurance and how many you have. Be a boss and floss 😎
