For the Summer Babies ☀️
labornurse Shared this tip last summer - and it’s another hot summer here in NC! 🔥
This is actually something I was unaware of when I was a FTM, but it totally makes sense!
When you keep your stroller/car seat covered for an extended amount of time (even with a light, breathable blanket) it can actually make the inside up to 20 degrees warmer.
Even the thinnest of covers can reduce the air circulation and raise the temperature inside to high levels (sort of like a “greenhouse effect”).
Now, people have been doing this for years, and it’s still a very common practice - especially if there is direct sunlight on your baby. Here are a few tips to remember in the summer when trying to keep baby cool and avoid heatstroke!
✅ Avoid going outside for extended periods of time with baby on super hot days
✅ Avoid direct sunlight if possible
✅ Use an umbrella, or overhead cover. It won’t restrict air circulation as long as there is an opening
✅ Check on baby every 10-15 mins, and if they seem flushed, sweaty, warm to the touch, irritable, drowsy/lethargic, or have any change in breathing (such as breathing much faster), these may be signs that baby is getting too hot. Remove baby immediately and bring to a cooler spot
✅ Use a fan on your stroller/car seat to help with air flow! They sell little portable/clip-on fans you can buy for cheap from Amazon/Target!
Heatstroke is a real threat in the summer, especially to little babies!
