Meet Bryson Houston , a 2024 McGruder-Knox Scholar 🎓 and fourth-year medical student at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania
When he applied to the McGruder-Knox scholarship in 2024, he was coming out of his clerkship year, juggling a busy schedule of hospital rotations and prepping for his board exams.
“The year prior, I was just trying to figure out what I really wanted to do with my career,”said Bryson. “And then in 2024, I took both of my step exams… When I received [the McGruder-Knox Scholarship] it was almost like the perfect timing. To get this scholarship at a time in which I needed a little bit more extra cash on hand to pay for [my exams] and prepare for my away rotations, it was so needed…
… To be a recipient during that year, I felt like, wow, someone is seeing me… to be recognized in a [prestigious] Philadelphia scholarship… it really did mean the world to me.”
Today, Bryson is serving communities in Philadelphia, specifically Black boys and men who are curious about medical careers.
“ [I worked with] the Hinkson Holloway Mentorship Program. They identify Black male high school students who are interested in medicine to interact with them, show them around our campus, etc.”
That’s all to say, Bryson’s journey expanded with taking a chance on the McGruder-Knox application.
“I didn’t know if I was going to get it or not, but I knew that I wasn’t going to get it if I didn’t apply.”
