One year ago at thanksgiving we were a team of 4, and now we are a team of 9! I can’t begin to express my insane amounts of gratitude for this special group of people that I get to work with day in and day out. What we’re doing at SVI is creating a work experience and patient experience like no other, and this group of people (plus those not pictured Shannon, Hala, Marc) work tirelessly to keep the vision alive. I am so grateful for you all!!

This past weekend was absolutely amazing. I had the ability to share in discussions with my glaucoma colleagues from around the country talking about how to do better for our patients. It’s always such a thrill to be at the Interventional Glaucoma Consortium where we can speak freely and honestly about the current state of affairs and where we think glaucoma is going. With new options such as DSLT, iDose, and more minimally invasive surgeries, we are challenged on how to best position technology to keep our patient’s pressures down. Can’t wait til next year!

How lucky are we to live in a country that allows us to vote for what we believe in? It’s also not lost on me how lucky we are to work in healthcare where we are exposed to every intersection of the human experience. Our patients come from all walks of life including different cultures, religions, socioeconomic status, and political beliefs. We embrace this diversity. We enjoy treating everyone with the kindness, respect, and care that they need and deserve. I had a brilliant professor in college who used to say that if you want to save the world, start with your neighborhood. We are proud to have voted today to support those who can’t support themselves. Happy election day!

***Huge Update***

I am so excited to welcome Dr. Patrick McManamon to the SVI team.

A true vision scientist, Dr. Pat is passionate about helping deliver the highest quality vision for his patients. You can expect him to be kind, compassionate, and most of all, patient. The only thing that out measures his height (he is almost 6’ 6”!) is his gigantic heart. He loves to bond with his patients and always leads with kindness. Just get him talking about hiking, biking, his dog, or most importantly, his wife Alison and their daughter Rose, and prepare to be entertained!

After graduating and completing his residency in Cornea and Contact Lenses at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry (now Salus at Drexel University), Dr. McManamon spent 8 years as the Director of Dry Eye and Specialty Contact Lenses at one of the busiest ophthalmology practices in southeastern Pennsylvania. Dr. McManamon’s expertise in cataract co-management led him to be Pennsylvania’s first optometrist and one of the first three in the country to perform adjustments for the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL).

At SVI, Dr. Pat and I (Dr. Shafer) work side-by-side to ensure that all of our patients get the care they need and deserve. Take care of your eyes and sight is our greatest joy!

Very proud moment today where I got to show off SVI to one of my childhood best friends and next door neighbor, Dave. He has always been an incredible soundboard to me and has of the sharpest minds I know. Dave has followed my journey through medical school and I’ve always shared with him the way I view the patient experience, efficiency, and excellence. It’s always such a treat to share what we’re building with those that we love!

TBT to the Interventional Glaucoma Masterclass a few weeks back hosted by tfgeducation. While I spend a lot of time lecturing around the country talking about modern glaucoma procedures, this was one of the most high yield classes I’ve been a part of.

Each of the mentors got paired with a group of mentees from around the country. We had 4 virtual sessions followed by an in person summit where we shared our experience and thought patterns with each other. I am so grateful for any experience I get to hear thoughts from thought leaders, peers, and learners. I came home invigorated and thinking about things in new ways!

And that's a wrap on AAO! We had an incredible meeting as a team. Megan, Ailinn, and Corrina were in high demand as other doctors, administrators, research teams, companies, and peers wanted to learn how we do things the SVI way. They took some courses, walked the exhibit hall floor, and spent a ton of time shmoozing. It was a joy to present some of our research on the exhibit hall floor and really give the credit to our incredible team for their hard work. As we head back to Philly, I am so proud of our team and the leaders they are all becoming.

I spent my time connecting with old friends, speaking on various topics related to customized cataract surgery and interventional glaucoma, and mentored many people interested in starting their own practices. And now, back to reality!

AAO 2024 off to a great start! I was lucky enough to talk about two of my favorite topics in one single lecture: refractive cataract surgery in patients with glaucoma! This talk is important because with our latest generations of lenses we are able to provide spectacle independence to so many patients that otherwise would have been excluded in years past. The talk focuses on contrast sensitivity, pupil size, and refractive stability. If you want to hear more, just ask me! I don’t shut up once you get me going!

10/17/2024

Today is a great day!!! Megan, Ailinn, Corrina and I are flying out to Chicago for the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s annual meeting. This is like the Super Bowl for ophthalmology meetings. There will be thousands of ophthalmologists from around the country and world!

While there, I’ll be teaching courses on refractive cataract surgery in glaucoma patients, revision surgery, corneal transplants, and moderating a research session on refractive surgery. The team will be there to connect with key practice staff from other practices around the country and will be soaking in information that we can implement at SVI.

Stay tuned as we’ll be sure to post updates!!
