May is Mental Health Awareness Month!

It's the perfect time to start important conversations about mental health and wellbeing. Here are 5 reasons why it's so important to talk about mental health:

Mental health affects everyone. We all have mental health, just like we all have physical health. Talking about mental health helps us recognize when we or our loved ones may be struggling and encourages us to seek the help we need.

Talking about mental health reduces stigma. Unfortunately, there is still a lot of shame and stigma surrounding mental health issues. By speaking openly and honestly about our experiences, we can help break down these barriers and create a more supportive and inclusive community.

It promotes self-care. When we talk about mental health, we emphasize the importance of taking care of ourselves both physically and emotionally. This can include things like getting enough sleep, exercising, and practicing mindfulness.

It builds empathy and understanding. When we share our stories and experiences, we can help others better understand what it's like to live with mental illness. This can help promote greater empathy and understanding, reducing judgment and discrimination.

It saves lives. Talking about mental health can help prevent su***de by providing a safe space for people to talk about their feelings and seek help when they need it.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, let's commit to having important conversations about mental health and creating a more supportive and compassionate world for everyone. đź’š

Four years ago, my daughter had her first seizure at the age of 10. My healthy, vibrant child had a major medical emergency, something that was unforeseen and certainly a shock to my world. I didn't have any answers, the doctors were unsure why this was happening, and I felt helpless cause I couldn't "fix" this for my baby. This event sent me straight to therapy. Let me just say, it was the best decision I could have made because that's when I learned coping skills, becoming more mindful of my thoughts, evaluating and processing my emotions, and most of all, self-care and compassion for myself. Talking to someone that has experienced trauma associated with their child can be helpful and life changing.
