You are growing, every moment of every day, just like my brand new baby Bird of Paradise plant. 🌱

One of my favorite quotes/sayings about trauma is that like plants, people are not products of simply their genetics but also their environment they grew up in (and are still in). When a plant that is wilting or yellowing, you don’t blame the plant - you check the soil, move it to have more or less light, and see if it has any kind of bugs or infections.

Like plants, people need to be removed from harmful environments in order to keep growing. 🪴 Abuse, neglect, bullying, natural or manmade disasters…these are all examples of “harmful environments” caused by trauma that people need to be removed and protected from.

You deserve to keep growing. How can you take care of yourself this week (maybe just like you would your plants??) 🌱💜✨

👉🏻 I’m a marriage and family therapist who has received training in Prolonged Exposure (PE) and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), two types of trauma therapy. I work in a community mental health setting and love working with families, kids, and teens.

📍I live in Philadelphia and I have a cat named
Enchilada who I talk about often. I’m a big fan of all kinds of pop culture and often incorporate creative activities in my therapy sessions because I believe that we can see ourselves and our lives reflected in stories all around us.

Have you ever worked with a therapist and felt like you didn’t get to tie in all the pieces to things that just ✨felt connected✨?? This is what I love about being a systems therapist! Please know that many other types of therapists are skilled at this too, however, this is part of our training as MFTs to look at connections between your different “systems.”

I find there’s often a lot of connections between the different harmful experiences people have had and the messages they carry with them afterwards. We sometimes need to touch on those experiences to come to an understanding about why we feel the way we feel and think the way we think.

Family therapists (like me) do what’s called “systems work” — we see our clients in relation to their families, friends, neighborhoods, schools, workplaces, religious communities, political parties, and MORE.

We generally believe that people are inextricably linked from their relationships and communities — meaning the problems they bring to therapy are most likely affecting and affected by their systems.

New Year’s can be a tough holiday if you’re struggling with your mental health or traumatic experiences (or even if you just don’t feel ready to take on the new year yet). Consider that your most important resolution is just making it through the year, and everything else comes secondary. Reach out for help if you need extra support.

Holidays can be peak comparison-joy-thief season, so keep in mind that if your holiday (or lack thereof) doesn’t look or feel as “perfect” as the people you see on your feed, remember that no one is posting the fight between their parents and siblings. No one is posting a picture of themselves feeling triggered about being back in their childhood bedroom. And no one is posting about the disappointment they feel when they try so hard to connect with loved ones and feel unseen and unheard again.

Family and relationships are hard, and that’s what holidays are all about. Loving reminder from me to you that nobody’s life, family, or relationships are perfect, we’re all just doing our best. I hope you get a chance to take a deep breath this holiday season, and to have a moment of serenity. 💜✨🫶🏻
