Penn Global Surgery Group A forum for updates, news, and events happening within the Penn Global Surgery community.

Historically, surgical interventions have not been a part of public health policy. Recent events, such as the passing of the World Health Organization's resolution on emergency and essential care, have brought the indispensable role that surgery can play in preventing disability, disease, and even death to the public. Providing surgical care in lower income countries is fraught with difficulty, but the rewards that come from successful programs are tremendous. The Penn Global Surgery Group seeks to explore and solve some of those problems by bringing people of all disciplines and backgrounds together. The mission of the Penn Global Surgery Group is to connect students, residents, and faculty with research, leadership and mentoring opportunities in global surgery. We organize educational events on the latest developments in the growing field of global surgery. Leadership:

Co-presidents: Rachel Johnson and Rosaline Zhang
Research Coordinators: Andrew Becker and James Friedman, MD

At our lunch talk yesterday on February 22, we heard Dr. David Spiegel, pediatric orthopaedic surgeon at CHOP, discuss his work treating clubfoot in Nepal. He has worked there for the past 20 years as a consultant at the Hospital & Rehabilitation Center for Disabled Children in Banepa, Nepal. Specifically, he shared his experience on adapting a more the Ponseti Method, which does not require invasive surgery, in this low-income setting. The Ponseti method is a manipulative technique which involves correcting clubfoot by gradually reducing the deformity using serial casting. This method has involved the training of healthcare workers to perform this casting in satellite clinics in the region, in order to improve follow-up. Check out our website to learn more about Dr. Spiegel's work and research!

"So I am a second year medical student at Penn and I'm part of Penn's Global Surgery Group. Every year, we have a symposium that highlights some aspects of global surgery. This year, it’s going to be pretty amazing because we are bringing in these two speakers that are going to be talking about international surgical education and some of the ethics associated with it. They will talk about training physicians and surgeons in other countries, which is really spectacular and that needs to be more widely known. One of our speakers is Dr. John Tarpley. He is from Vanderbilt, program director of general surgery, but he retired a few years ago to go to Africa to start up surgical programs to train surgeons. So it will be an incredible talk.

Free open bar. Free sit down dinner. And of course an amazing chance to engage with educators and surgeons. It will not only be for medical students, but for everyone. Come through this Saturday from 2 to 7 at the Law Auditorium. "

Dr. Geoff Tabin, Co-Founder of the Himalayan Cataract Project, came to speak with us on Nov 15th about the trials and successes of developing affordable and mobile cataract surgery and helping countries like Bhutan establish their own ophthalmology training programs. It was such a pleasure learning from his experiences mountaineering and eradicating cataract blindness from the Himalayans and now Sub-Saharan Africa!
