Heyyyy Family!

This is a question I wished I had asked myself AND had someone to hold me accountable to answering honestly!
The truth is pregnancy & birth (of any sort) requires a special balance of focus, mind-body-spirit work & surrender - among other things. However, when one is preparing to birth after one or more Cesarean births there are a lot of assumptions imposed on the upcoming birth experience - even before the person birthing has had a chance to fully grasp that they're pregnant!
So if this post is speaking to you, ask yourself this question. DON'T FEAR OR EDIT YOUR ANSWERS FOR "CORRECTNESS". What does your inner self want your whole self to recognize about how you feel about birth in general? About your past births? What do you envision for this birth? Pay attention to your dream AND your fear. They're both valid.
Are your reasons for wanting a VBAC wholly yours or have they been influenced by the assumptions & expectations of others? Pay attention to that answer too.
THE TAKE AWAY?
✨Embrace the deep dives that come with preparing for birth.
✨Learn from yourself as if you were a master teacher - because you are
✨Be honest about what is and what isn't true for YOU. Move how you want/need to move. And DON'T go explaining yourself to folks either...it's none of our business.

Phoenix Rising Birth Works is creating a community for Black/Indigenous cesarean birth mamas!
This offering is open to mamas IN PHILLY & BEYOND!
If you have given birth this way - this year, last year or several years ago - sign up for the OPEN HOUSE CALL on MONDAY NOVEMBER 18th @ 7pm to learn more about The Orange Lotus Sistahood!
The mission of this community is to support women in navigating all things "life after cesarean birth" from wholistic postpartum healing & lactation to processing the birth experience to preparing the body, mind & Spirit for future births to creating a Sacred Self & Womb care practice and everything in between.
This is an opportunity to receive and share the love, support, healing & motherwit that many of us need as Black/Indigenous women give birth by cesarean more than any other group in this country while also experiencing the highest occurrence of birth trauma in these births.
SHARE with all who can benefit & SIGN UP if this is calling to YOU!
Be the first to know and let us send you an email when Phoenix Rising Birth Works posts news and promotions. Your email address will not be used for any other purpose, and you can unsubscribe at any time.
I am a Birth & Postpartum Doula, Lactation Counselor and Childbirth Educator. I started this journey with the seemingly simple goal of supporting women in birth and helping them to avoid unnecessary medical interventions during labor and birth, including cesareans. While I know that cesareans can be life saving operations, I also know that our country’s rate is incredibly high, roughly 31% of all births, and the rate is even higher for Black Women. Our rate holds steady at about 38%. I wanted to help as many women as possible avoid the fate that I had been dealt with my births; a major surgery that would not only take longer to heal from physically, but impact my breastfeeding relationship with my daughters, take a toll on my mental health (we can’t talk enough about the fact that traumatic birth experiences can lead to PTSD/depression/anxiety) and sabotage my trust in body to birth future children.
After my third cesarean birth in the Fall of 2018, which was the culmination of a home birth transfer, I felt like I was mistaken in believing that I was called to be a Birth Worker. How could I help others in their journeys when I had failed so miserably in my own? Who would respect me? Trust my expertise or knowledge? After processing my anger, disappointment, self pity and fear, I realized I had to fine tune my approach. I had to remember that there is SO MUCH work to be done in terms of improving the state of perinatal / reproductive health care for Black Women, there is certainly a space for me. Surely my story is not an anomaly!
My experiences with cesarean birth and VBAC access (or better yet the lack thereof) led me to create “The Journey: A VBAC prep workshop”. I wanted to create a workshop unlike any I had seen being offered in my area for birthing people considering VBAC. It explores various aspects of the VBAC experience - including processing past birth experiences, finding a supportive provider, demystifying uterine rupture, planning a gentle cesarean when a repeat cesarean is truly necessary and more. I am beyond excited to begin offering this workshop in September! I am also committed to creating awareness about what many consider to be the “cesarean epidemic” and how VBAC bans intensify this trend, as well as advocating for the reversal of VBAC bans and other restrictions to VBAC access in hospitals and birth centers.
The birth of my youngest also brought an epiphany about the connection between the sexual abuse I endured as a child and my difficulties with pregnancy and childbirth. While my pregnancies with my daughters had been physically uneventful, I had been plagued with varying levels of stress, anxiety, fear and dissociation with all of them. I used to think these feelings were due to the fact that I have also had several miscarriages over the years and the trauma from my 1st and 2nd c-sections, but I now understand that my history of CSA (childhood sexual abuse) is what laid the foundation of my inability to truly be one with the process and birth my children the way I wanted to. This realization was the catalyst for The Purple Lotus Project - a grassroots initiative with a mission to promote awareness about the intersections of childhood sexual abuse and birth trauma through community education, workshops for birth professionals and peer support spaces for pregnant and parenting survivors.
In April 2019 during #BlackMaternalHealthWeek, I launched a childbirth & postpartum prep series “Ask A Doula”. Part workshop, part community gathering, “Ask a Doula” was conceived with the intent to make culturally sound childbirth education accessible and available in the Black community of Philadelphia. An opportunity for pregnant people and their families to come together with local birth workers to talk about their fears and hopes for their upcoming births, demystify the role of Doulas, how to access/afford Doula support, and learn about practical skills such as comfort measures for labor, birthing positions, baby wearing, easy prenatal & postpartum meal options and more! Ask a Doula is currently a quarterly event, but will be bimonthly as of April 2020.
So long and hopefully intriguing story short, my story is still being written and my mission ever unfolding and evolving. I hope you will join me and bear witness through my posts and events. Don’t hesitate to send me questions or comments, and if you feel I’m good for someone you know, referrals are worth their weight in gold.
