Join MCO on August 23 for an afternoon of food and fun as we welcome everyone back for another year of school. Students, residents, attendings and families are welcome! We’ll supply the BBQ meats and a few sides. If you are interested in joining us, reach out to us at info@mcophilly.org.

SMI Philly 2025 - Last Day

After frantically packing all their personal items, the team came together for one more time of worship. Then, Dr. Layer led them in some final thoughts about how to take what they've learned and return home to their regular pace of life.

And with that, SMI Philadelphia 2025 has ended. But in a sense, SMI is just beginning for these students. Our hope is that these last three weeks will be transformative in the life of each student. We would love to hear about how this program played a role in directing their life and vocation. We pray that SMI Philadelphia prompts each student, faculty, and volunteer to be more like Jesus as they live and serve their community.

SMI Philly 2025 - Day 20

Today the students continued preparation for the end of the program. We capped off the evening with a celebration dinner with several faculty, interpreters, and other volunteers attending. It was a good time celebrating what God has done through SMI Philly 2025.

SMI Philly 2025 - Day 18

Amidst the busyness of each day and the unexpected chaos of a sanitation worker strike, it can be easy to lose sight of what God is doing in our city. The SMI team receives frequent reminders when they pray with people and provide health screens in the neighborhood. They also see God's provision for their own need daily when volunteers bring dinner to the team. And sometimes, like today, they can see the Creator's beauty on display in the sky after a storm—a reminder of God's faithfulness and that He is at work every day. This is a lesson that we hope endures with the students long after their time in Philadelphia is over.

SMI Philly 2025 - Day 17

After spending their last weekend worshipping with some local churches, the team hit the streets again for some neighborhood outreach. The program is entering its final week. Please continue to pray for safety and for the neighbors to be receptive to the screens being offered by the SMI Team.

SMI Philly 2025 - Day 15

After enjoying a day off yesterday at the New Jersey shore, the team jumped back into neighborhood work today. The past few days of outreach have brought in some additional faculty, including some SMI Alumni.

SMI Philly 2025 - Day 13

Today was our Institute Day. The talks throughout the day focused on practical matters for healthcare students. The team actively listened to talks about discussing spiritual issues in healthcare, a theological framework for suffering, how to prepare for and manage burnout, and dealing with death in a clinical setting. Hopefully, everyone gained a better understanding of these topics.

SMI Philly 2025 - Day 11

It was good to have a visit from Jessie Thomas, CCHF Director of Programming for Residents and Students. SMI Philly is a ministry of CCHF (Christian Community Health Fellowship), a community of Christian healthcare professionals committed to living out the gospel through healthcare among the poor. Our summer program provides healthcare students an opportunity to see firsthand the type of neighborhood and people that CCHF clinics serve. Hopefully, these three weeks will inspire our students to also pursue a life of living out the gospel through healthcare among the marginalized communities around our country and the world.

SMI Philly 2025 - Day 8

Every year, we host an "outreach within an outreach" event, where we have SMI alumni and additional faculty join us for a large-scale neighborhood outreach day. Today, our team hit the streets to conduct door-to-door health screens. In addition to gaining insight from healthcare professionals and retirees, our current students have the opportunity to talk with our SMI alumni and hear about the ongoing impact that our program has had on the lives of those who have already completed SMI.
