COMFORT FOODS, LET’S TALK ABOUT ‘EM

I’ve been hearing a lot about the demonization of EMOTIONAL EATING and want to have a conversation about it.

Eating is farrrrrr more than simply something to keep ya alive.

Food is love.

❤️ Why do you think it’s at every family event?
❤️ Why do you think we ask a friend “have you eaten”?
❤️ When you’re sad, and want that food that brings you ACTUAL COMFORT because it reminds you of a loved one.

Shaming ourselves because we turn to food during an emotion is unproductive in my opinion.

A better solution? RECOGNIZE your emotions when you turn to food.

My concern with emotional eating isn’t so much that it happens. It’s when that becomes your ONLY way of coping with your emotions.

While I am qualified for nutrition education, I have my scope of practice. If you don’t have any other coping strategies, I encourage you to seek out therapy to add some tools to the toolbox!❤️

⭐️ SAVE AND SHARE ⭐️

So you’ve started learning more about diet culture and how invasive it is.

The problem now? What do you DO about it?

This series is a little support for figuring out how to challenge these comments and ways of thinking with some ideas on how YOU can stop the diet talk in it’s tracks.

At it’s core with other people, it’s setting boundaries on what you do and do not want to discuss.

It’s worth noting that these comments are usually not with malicious intent, but rather what that person is struggling with on their journey to navigate away from diet culture. You just may be a few steps ahead 😉

Can it be uncomfortable? Sure.

But you know what else is found in being uncomfortable?

Growth, babayyyyyy.

What is another “comment” that you’d add to this list??

🍁 HAPPY SUNDAY 🍁

It is officially fall err’body, and I am here 👏🏽 for 👏🏽 it 👏🏽

I’ve been taking some time away from posts but I’ve missed you guys and I feel like it’s a whole different season!!

The last few weeks have been hectic (aka moving with some unexpected turbulence 😂) but I’m starting to feel settled again thank goodness 😅

Just remember that tough situations are what make you stronger. I learned a while ago to approach difficult situations with a “how am I going to get myself out of this?” Type of attitude vs a “woe is me” mentality.

I know everything can feel overwhelming right now, but we have the power to rock the vote so CHECK YOUR REGISTRATION !!!!!!

And if you have, CHECK IT AGAIN. I had to update mine with the move but thankful I had the time to.

On a yummier note, I am in the process of making chili and pumpkin vibey cornbread and couldn’t be more excited for this gorg weather.

QUESTION FOR YOU GUYS:
What’s your favorite fall comfort food??

SAVE THIS POST FOR: A breakfast that isn’t always pretty, but always tastes good!!!!!

This was a “clean the fridge meal” that I loved.

Potatoes
Eggs
Bacon
Cream cheese
Spinach
Smoked Paprika
Crushed garlic
Chili powder
Oil

⭐️ “Bloom” the spices in the oil of your choice and then add the sliced potatoes to a cast iron. Once coated in oil, let them sit unbothered to crisp up.
⭐️ put some potatoes to the side, add scrambled eggs, crumbled bacon, small dollops of cream cheese and spinach. Add a lid and let the spinach wilt. Pull from the sides of the pan to let the egg set.
⭐️ once the eggs set, put remaining potatoes back on top. Serve and devour 🤤

Who said you can’t get your veggies in with breakfast???

My mom loved the spinach/cream cheese/ bacon vibe growing up and it was always a comfort breakfast for me.

In my program, I teach women to find joy in the foods they eat, find what suits THEM, and to ditch the dieting mindset that says you can’t have cream cheese with your eggs 😉

REAL TALK- WHAT DO YOU LIKE DOING LESS OF?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all about seeing the positives. But spending the last few months being limited on what I CAN do has made me realize what I don’t LIKE to do.

I don’t like to be inside all the time, so I make time to get out in nature whenever I can.

Other things to not like? Not focusing on the root cause of something when trying to find solutions.

Need an example? Restricting what you eat because you think that your weight is tied to your health.

Something I’ve been reviewing lately with colleagues is the idea that the BEHAVIOR CHANGE PRECEDES THE WEIGHT LOSS.

Therefore, THE WEIGHT LOSS DOES NOT DETERMINE THE HEALTH OUTCOMES.

Which means the weight doesn’t dictate the status of health but the culmination of that persons behaviors.

It’s a math equation that could give you a head ache if you let it.

But focusing on what I want to do *LESS* is something I’ll be happy to bring on to the other side.

But what about you? Doing the dishes or doing laundry— which do you like LESS?

IT’S THE “NOT LIKING BEING TOLD WHAT I CAN DO” for me!

Lmao me @ every single recipe I’ve never been able to follow to a T.

But have you ever made something so good you’ve surprised yourself?

I’ll be honest, I’ve always been intimidated by making curries because I’m not as familiar or comfortable with the flavors that go into it and therefore I’m more reliant on a recipe and can’t be as intuitive.

But my GOAL is to play the game and use the recipes (ish) to help me become more familiar and then come 2021, it’s over for you hoes!!!!!!

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

I digress lol......

Anyways, this was a great blend of delish. The butternut squash recipe is by and the eggplant curry is by if you want to recreate it 😉

| Coconut rice with cilantro
| butternut squash curry
| red curry with eggplants and chickpeas (my own addition because I can’t follow directions without showing some creativity SOMEWHERE)

What about you guys? Do you like following a recipe or do you beat to your own spatula?

Here is your 🌟 reminder 🌟 that you don’t have to fit into any ONE box.

🔸Wear makeup or don’t.
🔸Shave all the hair below your eyebrows or don’t.
🔹Eat FREE of certain foods, or DON’T.

Let’s do what makes US feel our BEST and not worry about where we might fall on the societal boxes of “fitting in”.

When we start focusing on us at the center when it comes to health and happiness, we are able to define them for ourselves instead of spending energy on how we can fit into the box that wasn’t meant for us!!

Women are strong AF, and the stuff we can do when we shift our focus is powerful.

✨ Shift to focusing on building ourselves up and claiming space instead of how to make ourselves smaller and watch the magic happen ✨

Double tap and tag one of your girlfriends to hype them up and send some love 💕 👯‍♀️

Beauty is in the mouth of the one eating homemade pasta 🍝

Okay, yes I made that up- but why are we buying pasta when homemade HITS DIFFERENT.

Two ingredients and some anger management therapy working out that dough and BOOM, BABY you got yourself some truly elevated dinner.

Side note, y’all thought I was going to talk about this bolognese I SLAVED over the stove making (a true life, dramatic term I used with my bf the other night), but nope, it was the pasta.

Something about throwing myself into a meal for a few hours that truly relaxes me (except for all those dishes 🤦🏽‍♀️)

SAVE THIS POST for the next time you need a reminder to eat those “bad” foods without guilt.

Let me set the scene: it’s 8pm, you’ve had dinner and you see some cookies [or other food that has been deemed “off limits”] on the counter CALLING your name.

You stand in your kitchen and quickly eat one.

Then another.

Then four more.

Before you know it, you ate half of the container. And now sets in the guilt.

But if I asked you how those cookies satisfied you....you couldn’t even tell me you enjoyed them right?

When we assign morality to foods and call them “good” or “bad” our brain also assigns that morality.

What do we do if we’re doing something bad?

Try to do it quickly and quietly so it goes unnoticed, right?

But I want you to think about it like this:

If you want the cookie— instead of drinking water, or brushing your teeth, or whatever else diet culture suggests—
why not take a moment to TRULY savor that cookie and have your WAY with it 😉 (yes, I know, to the max).

If you’re going to have a cookie in both situations— why not take the time to slow down and enjoy it.

When I work with my clients, I help them to take the morality and labels off of foods they’ve restricted for YEARS and teach them that all foods can fit.

I have an exercise I do with every one of my clients related to this and EVERY single time they’re shocked by the results.

We can have our cake, and eat it too while we work to make choices to improve our health.
