March is Multiple Myeloma Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about this blood cancer, encourage action, and support those affected, with the goal of improving treatments and outcomes.

Multiple myeloma is a blood cancer that develops when plasma cells (a type of white blood cell) in the bone marrow grow uncontrollably. These abnormal plasma cells crowd out normal blood-forming cells, leading to various complications. It is a relatively uncommon cancer, but an estimated 35,700 people are diagnosed with it yearly in the United States. Myeloma is more common in older people, especially older men, and in African Americans. Risk factors include age, gender, race, family history, and having a condition called monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS).

Celebrate Valentine's Day for your cancer patient, cancer caregiver, family and friends. Remember how important love, faith, and hope are and be sure to thank the researchers, doctors, nurses, and and all the healthcare professionals who there for us.

This year, I will miss my favorite Valentine, Jack Kavanagh, who lived life with Myeloma to the fullest for 33 years and was an inspiration for all of us. We were all blessed to know him.
