Almost exactly a year from my foot surgery, I was back at the first race I missed this morning. I've done a few 5ks and a 10k since that eventful accident, but none of them I went into with a "race mentality" or a goal pace. They were just "go out and finish it before the course closes" events with zero training. Thankfully this year my usual fall training program offered a "sport walking" 10k option where we learned how to walk similarly to those professional race walkers and work towards an athletic goal even though we're "just" walking.
I was also really nervous about how well it would go with my new foot pain issue that's developed over my long walks and how tight my hips/glutes have been after mile 3 or 4. While I was warming up, a lady came over after noticing I was doing some yoga type stretches and they were doing pre-race stretching!! She worked quickly on loosening up my hip area and glutes and adducters, and I think it made a big difference! I'm so happy to say I nailed my stretch goal pace for the race!!!! I think that stretching session and icing my feet after with last night and taking an ibuprofen before bed were absolutely part of my success.
My foot pain did show up, but not until the last mile or so and not very much. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
10 days until my return to the Phoenix Turkey Trot 10k! And then it's time for half marathon training to be ready for February and my several year's deferred Mesa Half Marathon.
