🌿 Black Maternal Health Week 2026 draws to a close tomorrow — and what a week it has been.
For ten years, the Black Mamas Matter Alliance has done what so many institutions would not — center Black mothers, amplify their voices, and demand a maternal health system worthy of them. "Rooted in Justice and Joy" is not just this year's theme. It is a declaration that Black women deserve more than survival. They deserve to thrive — before, during, and long after birth.
That work is not finished. The disparities are real. The losses are real. And the mothers still navigating pregnancy and postpartum without the dignified, culturally responsive care they deserve — they are real.
Mainline Maternity Care stands in full support of everything this week represents. And as we honor its close tomorrow, we are asking ourselves — what does our part look like?
As we step into May — Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month — with World Maternal Mental Health Day on May 6 — we believe our part begins at the intersection of two conversations that belong together:
Black maternal health. And maternal mental health.
Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders are the number one complication of childbirth — affecting 1 in 5 pregnant or postpartum people. And the data shows us that cannabis use among pregnant and lactating individuals ranges from 3.9% to 16% — highest in the first trimester, most often tied to managing stress, anxiety, and the weight of early pregnancy.
We are not surprised by that. We are paying attention.
When a mother is overwhelmed and reaches for something to cope — that is a maternal mental health moment. And if the only response she receives is silence, shame, or fear — that is a failure our community cannot afford.
That is why Mainline Maternity Care is launching Growing Healthy Futures — in partnership with the Baltimore City Health Department and B'more for Healthy Babies.
Growing Healthy Futures is a family-centered cannabis awareness and safe home planning initiative — created specifically for families who consume cannabis or live in households where cannabis is used. We are bringing together pregnant and postpartum mothers and parents of children 0–3 for honest community conversation — building awareness of the risks around pregnancy, postpartum, and young children, and working together on a safety plan that protects the whole family.
This is where awareness meets action. This is our part in the work.
If you are pregnant, postpartum, or parenting a child 0–3 and cannabis is part of your world — this space was built for you. Come as you are.
