Shoulder pain doesn’t always mean a shoulder problem. 👀

Pain along the medial border of the scapula (inner shoulder blade) is very often referred pain from the cervical or thoracic spine, not the shoulder joint itself.

Here’s why this matters ⬇️
The nerves and muscles that influence the shoulder blade originate in the neck and upper back. When those areas aren’t moving well, are overloaded, or irritated, the brain often “projects” the pain to the scapular region—making it feel like a shoulder issue.
👉 Treating the shoulder alone in these cases can miss the real driver.
👉 Addressing cervical and thoracic mobility, posture, and load tolerance often leads to faster and longer-lasting relief.

This is why a full-body assessment matters. Pain is a messenger, not always the source.

If your shoulder blade pain keeps coming back despite strengthening or injections, it may be time to look upstream. 💡

This is for the person who continuously gets treated for symptoms that are NOT improving! Most likely, it’s because the ROOT cause of the issue hasn’t been addressed. I love massage, needling, cupping and KT tape as much as the other guy, but I use these tools as a way to control the symptoms while addressing the ROOT problem!
