Merry Christmas from Rocky!🎄
Rattlesnakes are still out!!

As a matter of fact, September & October are prime-time baby rattlesnake seasons, as most mothers give birth during late August, September and perhaps early October.

Did you know?... Your dog can be trained to recognize rattlesnakes by sight sound or scent AND to then avoid them. They can possibly help you avoid an unfortunate surprise encounter as well by serving as your early warning system.

My professional herpetologist & I offer what many of my thousands of extremely satisfied clients have claimed is the most humane, comprehensive and effective (R.A.T.) training they have experienced. Uniquely we take you through the course WITH your dog, and also offer options of traditional e-collar as well as vibrate and spray options.

Last Saturday was one of the hardest & saddest days of our lives, our sweet little Pepper went to doggy heaven.😥 My family and I just want to thank Dr. Joel and Staff for being so caring and helping us through the end of life process. Dr. Joel made us feel as comfortable as possible and understood the pain we were going through. We feel that Dr. Joel gave us the last 3 years with Pepper. When we brought Pepper to him in the summer of 2016, she was a very sick little girl, turned out she was diabetic and we almost lost her at that time. So, Thank You, Dr. Joel and Staff.

Most hours, reasonable prices, great staff, competent & caring. They often get me lab results before I leave the office. Went to them for a second opinion and ended up switching vets. I highly recommend them!

Why run screening labs? General screening labwork can provide us so much information about your companion! We use this to aid in early disease detection and establishing normals for your pet to help detect early change. Additionally, since our patients cannot talk to us, we use labwork to give us some information that our patients cannot. Of course, in a sick patient, there may be additional testing that helps us gather even more pieces of information. Make sure to discuss screening labwork with your vet at your next visit!

Bee stings are common amongst canines, especially those who like to chase them for fun! Some dogs do not have a reaction to these stings. Other dogs may experience mild to severe swelling at the site of the sting. Some may experience an anaphylactic reaction, characterized by swelling, vomiting and diarrhea. These reactions must be treated immediately to avoid more severe consequences. If your dog is experiencing a suspected bee sting, give us a call at 805-773-0474!

Heat stroke: As the summer heats up, it is important to protect your pets from its dangers!

Dogs and cats are less heat tolerant due to their inability to sweat. This can make hiking and other outdoor activities in the heat more dangerous for them.

This is especially true for brachycephalic, or short-nosed, breeds such as French bulldogs, English bulldogs and pugs.

Here are some tips for staying safe this summer:
- Schedule outdoor activities during the coolest times of the day, such as early morning or near sundown.
- Provide lots of water!
- Use cooling rags or kiddy pools
- DO NOT leave your pet in the car for any length of time!

Call us immediately if your pet shows symptoms such as lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, or harsh breathing. 805-773-0474

SUSTAINABILITY Matters at PBVC - Pismo Beach Veterinary Clinic

https://pismobeachvet.com/sustainability/

SUSTAINABILITY MATTERS AT PBVC

Pismo Beach Veterinary Clinic believes in sustainability and doing our part to preserve our planet.

We feel so lucky to live, work, and play in this amazing, diverse, and beautiful place we call the Central Coast. Even after 16 years living here, I still get a little tingle of excitement and gratitude when I pass Ontario Ridge heading south from SLO on 101 and get my first glimpse of the ocean. It is easy, sometimes, to forget that despite our idyllic weather and picturesque surroundings, our planet is in trouble.

Pismo Beach Veterinary Clinic exists, at its core, to help our clients and our patients live happier, healthier, and more fulfilling lives. As such, we feel a responsibility to take whatever actions we can to help decrease our carbon footprint and to set an example in our community for environmental stewardship. Though Sarah and I have always emphasized sustainability in all aspects of our private life, we (for some reason) never really considered the importance of bringing these concepts into our business. We now recognize that taking these steps as a business is even more important than doing so individually because we are potentially able to have a much larger sphere of influence and have a trickle-down effect on our staff, clients, and community.

Here are a few of the many things we are doing to reduce our environmental impact:

We have fully revamped our recycling program to maximize our waste reduction, including recycling of e-waste, alternative plastics, and composting green waste.

We have replaced all of our toilets with ultra-low water toilets.

We have installed a huge solar array and Tesla power walls, allowing us to be nearly 100% self-powered off of the sun.

We have installed a Tesla car charger to encourage green commuting.

We have replaced all of our fluorescent and incandescent lights with LED bulbs.

We have replaced all of our paper products with recycled paper and have installed reusable fabric hand dryers and electric air hand dryers.

We will be installing an instant water heater to replace our conventional gas heater.

We have worked with our suppliers to reduce packaging, plastics, and shipments for our medical supplies.

We have incentivized the staff to commute more responsibly via bike, carpool, and electric vehicles.

We have installed energy efficient computer monitors, refrigerators, laundry, and other appliances.

We have switched to non-toxic and low waste cleaners and laundry products.

We regularly conduct staff training and updates on green friendly practices.

We purchase carbon offset credits for any continued education air travel.

We only buy food from restaurants that use eco-friendly packaging and DON’T send a million individually wrapped plastic utensils.

We have stocked our breakroom with reusable plates and utensils.

We have a paperless electronic medical records system and have digitized all of our faxes.

We have invited many local businesses to join our sustainability efforts and facilitated several outreach events with Eco-SLO.

We have established a “Green Team” to help coordinate our business’s eco activities and incentives and to continuously look for more ways to “go green.”

Finally, as of 2022, we are super excited to announce that we are one of only a handful of businesses in the county to have become SLO GREEN BUSINESS CERTIFIED!

At Pismo Beach Veterinary Clinic, we believe that actions speak louder than words. We recognize that living on the Central Coast and serving our wonderful clients and patients is a true gift. We will continue to do all that we can to promote the highest standard of sustainability in everything we do.

Stars, stripes, and everything nice!

Happy 4th of July from your friends at Pismo Beach Veterinary Clinic

06/30/2022

Noise Phobia: Many of our canine companions are terrified of the loud firework festivities of the 4th of July. This fear and anxiety can range from trembling and hiding to destroying furniture to trying to run away. We want to help you and your canine companions enjoy the 4th of July without fear or injury.

Many dogs with severe fear need anti-anxiety medications to help calm them. Please call us @ 805-773-0474 if your pet is in need of medication.

Here are some other tips that can help: -
Play loud white noise to help diminish the sounds of fireworks
Give lots of good treats and distracting toys (such as kongs and puzzle toys) when fireworks are heard to help make them a positive trigger
Try calming devices, such as a Thunder Shirt, comforting stuffed animal, or a shirt with your scent
Dogs who are crate trained should have access to their crate in a calm spot, this is a safe space
If your dog is prone to running, ensure they have their collar on, are microchipped and that all doors are secured to prevent escape

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! No matter your heritage, this holiday has become a day to celebrate Irish culture with traditional foods, beers, music, dancing, and green everywhere!

Pets will therefore have more exposure to potential toxins and hazards. But you don’t have to trust your pet’s health to luck!

Protect them by keeping them away from common St. Patrick’s Day pet dangers like:
• Alcohol
• Shamrocks
• Traditional Irish Foods
• Chocolate
• Green Dyes

We hope you and your pets have a safe St. Patrick’s Day!
