One of the key characteristics of those of us who have had adverse experiences in childhood is a tendency to be at times extremely negative towards ourselves. It feels normal and reasonable to berate ourselves for all our difficulties, all our challenges, all our responses to trauma. So being triggered by traumatic reminders wasn't for me just about the event that I was remembering; sometimes the worse impact was the way I treated myself even for being triggered in the first place. Needless to say, learning self-compassion was a critical step towards healing.

When we experience trauma, we may find it more challenging to engage with the world. When we can work toward understanding our experiences, we may gain the capacity to find ways to heal by making a positive impact on the lives of others.
