In America we swab for gbs in the third trimester weeks before labor, and if the test is positive women are given antibiotics that wipe out their gut microbiome which drastically effects the heath of the baby. The thing is gbs is a normal bacteria and it can come and go at any time. The swab two weeks before labor means nothing weather it is negative or positive because it can be here one day and gone the next. Other industrialized countries with better infant and material mortality rates do the wait and see method because of the risk benefit proportion.

Is your va**na really linked to your throat!?!?

Do they look a lot alike? How similar are they and how do they affect each other? Can this affect labor? Read on to find out more.

The anatomical link between the va**na and the vocal chords is the largest nerve we own, called the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve is primarily a sensory nerve. It picks up on signals and responds accordingly. Read this short article to learn more. https://www.baby-chick.com/vocal-va**nal-correlation/

Pelvic exams are unnecessary and just cause women anxiety puts them and baby at risk for infection, and can cause “accidental” membrane sweep ect. It is not indicative at all of when you will go into labor ❤️

Does your care provide expect to routinely put their hand inside you without asking for consent or discussing risk? If so, its time to find a new care provider!

Sara Wickham looks at Danish research which compared induction of labout at 42 weeks with induction of labour at 41+3 weeks, with interesting results.

Pitocin is a tool.

We don’t use a hammer to screw in a screw or a saw to hammer in a nail.

So, let’s use Pitocin for its intended purpose and only after informed consent.

I am using this beautiful Rebozo on a mama at the hershey training to help give her comfort and ease pain. To learn more about the rebozo life/origin and how it is used to benefit women during pregnancy, labor, and delivery check out this link. https://antamashop.com/blogs/antama/rebozo Thanks to Mallory Scalise for the photo❤️

Read this and look into why not to suction your baby

There’s a better way to clear secretions from a neonate’s mouth and nose, and it’s less likely to cause adverse effects.

God designed us in an amazing way.

Birth and a woman's body are so incredible...Nearly 700 births and I'm still so amazed every single time!

Two amazing things (of many!) about this photo: That bulge above her sacrum is called The Rhombus Michaelis. Just before birth, the baby's head presses on these special nerves causing them to contract and slightly open up the lower back. This gives baby the maximum amount of space to rotate their shoulders.

The other obvious thing in this photo is the bulgy bag of amniotic fluid. Some amniotic sacs are very strong. This one stayed intact as she walked from the tub to the bed and ruptured moments later as she felt a strong urge to push.

Baby was born 14 minutes after this photo was taken and this mama got her VBAC! 💕 (As always, posted with permission)

Mamas, you DO NOT have to lay on your back to give birth regardless of what your provider says. Being on your back is to typically benefit the provider and not the woman. Very rarely would a woman need to be on her back unless she wants too! Being on your back is not the optimal position for labor because when you’re on your back you are literally pushing uphill. The birth canal curves upwards when you lie down, therefore you are going against gravity when laying on your back.
Birthing on your back can make labour last longer because the body has to work much harder to eject the baby.
Being on your back reduces the pelvic opening by up to 30% compared to other positions such as standing or squatting.
Birthing in this position increases your risk of experiencing an assisted or medicalised birth.
Laying on the back constricts blood vessels, meaning baby and mother won’t receive the optimum levels of blood & oxygen.
If baby is in a non-optimal position (such as posterior), then the baby is less likely to shift into a better position while mama is on her back. These are just some of the reason to not labor on your back unless that is your desire. Your provider can’t bully you into anything you don’t want.

Did you know that breech is actually a variation of normal and that is is actually safer to deliver a breech baby va**nally? In 2000 a study called the Term Breech Trial concluded that cesarean delivery was much safer than va**nal breech birth. As a result, va**nal breech birth was eliminated almost overnight from most hospitals and the teaching of breech skills ceased entirely.

However, many researchers were not convinced by the TBT. Since 2000 many major studies, mostly in Europe, have refuted the conclusions of the TBT. The short-term risks of va**nal breech birth to the baby are small, and va**nal birth is markedly safer for the mother and her future pregnancies. Obstetric societies in the USA (ACOG), Canada (SOGC), UK (RCOG), Australia & New Zealand (RANZGOC) have all come out in support of va**nal breech birth when attended by a skilled, trained provider.

In an ideal world, obstetric residency programs would have enthusiastically reintroduced breech skills in response to the emerging evidence. But unfortunately this did not happen. By 2016, 94% of all breech presentations in the US were delivered by cesarean section, accounting for 11% of all cesarean deliveries.

Being able to choose whether or not to have surgery is a fundamental legal and ethical right granted to all adults--except pregnant women with breech babies. Here is a link to look at some studies/research. http://www.breechwithoutborders.org/p/english.html?m=1
